Text in Latin with quotations and examples in Runic, Danish and Greek. Includes index. With an engraved allegorical title to 'Danicorum Monumentorum'. Pages 1, and 28-9 of 'Reum Daniae' printed in red and black. Collated from Jisc from copies held at the University of Oxford Libraries, and King's College London Library, bound without rear endpaper, otherwise complete. A fascinating work on Scandinavian runes, being Ole Worm's magnum opus on runes. 'Danicorum Monumentorum' was the first written study of runestones, and the first scientific analysis of runestones. It is also one of the only surviving sources for depictions of various runestones and inscriptions from Denmark, some of which are now lost. To create 'Danicorum Monumentorum', Worm sent various artists around the Danish kingdom, tasking them with providing accurate sketches of the monuments and their engraved runes. Most runestones are located in Scandinavia, particularly in modern day Sweden, and the tradition of making them began in the fourth century, continuing until the twelfth century. Runestones are raised stones with runic inscriptions, often memorials to dead men. They were typically brightly coloured when built, but the colour has worn off. 'Regum Daniae' is a part of the oldest surviving manuscript of the Scanian law codex, a medieval manuscript of provincial law. The manuscript in question was peculiar, as it had been written in runes, and provided evidence to Worm that runes were the common medieval letters in Scandinavia. In this work are also two lists on Danish kings, and short medieval treatises which states that Scania belongs to Denmark. Scania is a province in the south of Sweden. The Codex Runicus, which is written in medieval runes, was a codex from around the year 1300. Worm is known as the founder of Danish research into runes. He was given letters of introduction by the King of Denmark, to introduce Worm to the bishops of Denmark and Norway. However, Worm is now best known for his 'Museum Wormianum', a cabinet of curiosities in his home in Copenhagen. His curiosities ranged from objects from the natural world, to scientific instruments, to global cultural objects. It provided the foundation for what became Denmark's National Museum. Worm was also the professor of Greek, Latin, Physics, and Medicine at the University of Copenhagen. He wrote other works on Danish runes, including his 1626 work 'Fasti Danici'. In science, his speciality was in embryology, and the Wormian bones are names after him. Two important works by the Danish antiquarian Ole Worm. In a full contemporary calf binding. Monumentorum Danicorum - Worms Hauptwerk über Runen; es stellt nicht nur die erste schriftliche Studie und wissenschaftliche Analyse von Runensteinen dar, sondern ist auch eine der wenigen erhaltenen Quellen für Abbildungen zahlreicher dänischer Runensteine und Inschriften, von denen viele heute verloren sind. Mit seinen zahlreichen Holzschnittdarstellungen von Denkmälern mit Runeninschriften gilt es wohl als das bedeutendste jemals verfasste Werk über Runen; es begründete die wissenschaftliche Erforschung von Runen und Runendenkmälern. Die meisten Holzschnitte basieren auf Zeichnungen des norwegischen Studenten Jonas Skonvig; sie sind heute von immenser Bedeutung für die Runenforschung, nicht nur weil sie hier erstmals im Druck erschienen, sondern auch, weil viele der Denkmäler inzwischen verloren sind und diese Illustrationen die einzigen erhaltenen Zeugnisse darstellen. Ole Worm (Olaus Wormius) (1588-1655) war ein berühmter dänischer Universalgelehrter, der weit gereist war und an verschiedenen europäischen Universitäten studiert hatte. Wie viele bedeutende Intellektuelle der Frühen Neuzeit war Worms Hauptberuf der des Arztes; in dieser Funktion erlangte er großen Ruhm. Später wurde er Leibarzt des dänischen Königs Christian IV. Im Jahr 1621 erhielt Worm eine Professur für Physik, doch bereits 1620 hatte er mit dem Aufbau jener berühmten Sammlung begonnen, die sich zu einem der bedeutendsten Kuriositätenkabinette Europas (und zu einem der ersten Museen überhaupt) entwickeln und ihm den Ruf des ersten großen systematischen Sammlers (auf dem Gebiet der Naturkunde) in Skandinavien einbringen sollte. Eben diese Sammlung, die er kurz zuvor begonnen hatte, ermöglichte es ihm, als Physikprofessor einen anschaulichen, objektbezogenen Unterricht an der Universität einzuführen - eine absolute Neuerung. Sein Leben lang baute er diese prächtige Sammlung, die heute als "Museum Wormianum" bekannt ist, weiter aus. Wormshatte auch ein tiefes Interesse an der frühen skandinavischen Literatur und Runendichtung sowie an Geschichte und Bedeutung der Runensteine. Diese in ganz Skandinavien verbreiteten Denkmäler wurden im Zeitraum vom 4. bis zum 12. Jahrhundert errichtet und mit Runeninschriften versehen. Meist handelt es sich um Grabsteine, die vermutlich für Helden und Krieger aufgestellt wurden. Worm veröffentlichte Schriften zum Runenkalender, Übersetzungen von Runentexten sowie Erläuterungen zu den mit den Runensteinen verbundenen Überlieferungen. Sein mit Abstand umfangreichstes und bedeutendstes Werk war "Danicorum Monumentorum"; es stellte den ersten ernsthaften Versuch dar, alle 144 damals bekannten Runenstein-Fundorte in Dänemark wissenschaftlich zu analysieren und zu dokumentieren. Mit dem Segen und der Unterstützung des Königs wandte sich Worm an Bischöfe im ganzen Land und wies sie an, Angaben und Zeichnungen zu den Grabhügeln, Steinkreisen und Inschriften in ihren jeweiligen Regionen zu liefern. Viele der in diesem großartigen Werk verzeichneten Denkmäler sind inzwischen verschwunden. la 1200 gr.

Written by one of the founders of runic studies, this is the author's first work on the subject, dealing extensively with the Medieval runic calendar system and illustrating important Scandinavian artifacts. Although runes have been used for inscriptions since ancient times, runic calendars--a type of perpetual calendar used to record lunar cycles and important days, including Christian feast days--are believed to have emerged in the Middle Ages, and were still used in some places into the 19th century. Significantly, the present work includes a comprehensive study of one of the oldest known runic calendars to have survived the Medieval period: a vellum manuscript called the "Computus Runicus" found in Gotland, Sweden, dating to 1328. Our author includes a transcription of the text, images, and tables found in the Computus Runicus, as well as a side-by-side translation and notes in Latin, and, in places, the vernacular. The original manuscript was lost in the fire that destroyed approximately one third of Copenhagen in 1728, making the present work the only extant record of its existence, and a critical source for the study of early Medieval runes. First published in 1626, the present enlarged edition contains a longer text and five additional illustrations, including a full-page image of a runic calendar carved into bone (which is now also believed to be lost). In addition to his groundbreaking work on the history and translation of runes, Ole Worm (1588-1654) was also a natural historian, antiquary, and the personal physician to King Christian IV of Denmark. Today he is best remembered for his famous wunderkammer, dubbed the "Museum Wormianum," containing an extensive collection of natural curiosities and cultural artifacts from all over the world. All of Worm's writings are very scarce.
