General John Shalikashvili (1936-2011) served as Supreme Allied Commander Europe and the 13th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1993-1997. Shalikashvili was the first foreign-born to serve as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs. He retired in 1997 after 38 year of service and died in 2011. His wife, the recipient of this book, is still alive.
