First and only edition of a detailed and accurate atlas of Friesland, one of the most detailed regional mapping projects of its period. The paper was especially made by J. Honig, Zaandijk. According to the preface there were 286 subscribers to the atlas, which was actually quite high according to Koeman. It was issued over a ten…-year span, it comprises finely engraved cadastral-style maps of Friesland's thirty grietenijen (later municipalities), including the eleven Frisian cities and the islands of Ameland and Schiermonnikoog. The maps, drawn from official surveys and engraved on copper, are notable for their precision, decorative cartouches, and heraldic elements. The atlas remains an important monument of Dutch topographical cartography.The edges of the boards show slight signs of wear, slight browning throughout, occasional staining. Gemeente Ferwerderadeel (Voormalig Tweede Grietenij van Oostergoo). Groot formaat staalgravure vervaardigd in 1853 door Daniel Veelwaard voor de Nieuwe Atlas van Provincie Friesland van Wopke Eekhoff. Later met de hand gekleurd. Afm. ca. 57,5 x 66,5 cm. Ferwerderadeel (Fr: Ferwerderadiel) in het midden van de 19e eeuw, zoals te…zien op deze kaart, toont een typisch Fries plattelandsgebied met een rijke agrarische cultuur en uitgebreide waterbeheerssystemen. Enkele belangrijke dorpen in de gemeente zijn Ferwerd (Ferwert), Hallum, en Marrum. Deze dorpen zijn duidelijk gemarkeerd en vormen de kern van de lokale gemeenschappen. De grietenij werd bestuurd door een grietman, die werd aangewezen door Leeuwarden, die over het gebied heerste. De grietman was verantwoordelijk voor de handhaving van de wet en orde en had ook bevoegdheden op het gebied van rechtspraak en belastingheffing.Na de invoering van de gemeentewet in 1851 had Ferwerderadeel niet langer grietmannen, maar burgemeesters. De Nieuwe Atlas van Provincie Friesland, werd in opdracht van het provinciebestuur gemaakt. Op 2 maart 1847 verscheen in de Leeuwarder Courant het "Berigt van Inteekening op de uitgave van een nieuwe Atlas van Vriesland". De prijs voor de hele atlas met 32 kaarten was fl. 48, losse kaarten kostten fl. 2 per stuk. Iedere kaart werd in de betreffende gemeente twee weken ter inzage gelegd. Via een voorafgaande publicatie in de Leeuwarder Courant meldde Eekhoff dat "ieder in de gelegenheid wordt gesteld om daarop schriftelijke aanmerkingen aan het Bestuur mede te deelen". Ook werd nog even vermeld dat men nog steeds voor twee gulden een losse kaart kon bestellen, "dewijl die na de uitgave niet meer te bekomen zullen zijn". Op zijn dertiende ging Wopke Eekhoff (1809 - 1880) in zijn geboortestad Leeuwarden aan het werk bij boekhandelaar en drukker G.T.N. Suringar. Hij ontwikkelde zich tot een self-made historicus van naam. In 1838 werd hij benoemd tot stadsarchivaris van Leeuwarden, de eerste van Nederland. Die functie combineerde hij met een eigen boekhandel en uitgeverij op de hoek van de Wirdumerdijk en de Peperstraat. In een oplage van 286 exemplaren gaf Eekhoff in 1849 de Nieuwe Atlas van Friesland uit, tegenwoordig beter bekend als de Eekhoff-atlas. Tien jaar daarvoor hadden Gedeputeerde Staten van Friesland opdracht gegeven om de provincie opnieuw in kaart te brengen. Met behulp van driehoeksmeting werden de kaarten samengesteld door J.W. Witteveen (tekenaar bij het kadaster), onder toezicht van ingenieur-verificateur J.H. Jappé. De kaarten werden gegraveerd door D. en H. Veelwaard en beletterd door L. Schweickhardt. Prijs: Euro 275,-.
