Very scarce first editions of prominent radical periodicals of early 19th century Britain, including twenty issues of 'The Black Dwarf' and two volumes of 'Cobbett's Political Register'. Handsomely bound in half calf are a number of issues of two 19th century periodicals.The first of these periodicals are 'The Black Dwarf', a satirical radical journal of early 19th century Britain.It was published by Thomas Jonathan Wooler. Its provocative content included iconoclastic satire, parodies and humour supporting Reform and working class interests.There are twenty consecutive issues of this very scarce periodical, from No. 1, Vol. IV Wednesday, January 12th 1820 No. 20, Vol. IV, Wednesday May 24th, 1820.Also present are volumes XXXVI and XXXVII of 'Cobbett's Political Register', featuring consecutive issues from Vol. 36, No. 12, Saturday, June 3rd 1820 to Vol. 37, No. 24, Saturday, December 30th, 1820.Originally propounding Tory views, and costing a shilling, Cobbett changed his editorial line to embrace radicalism, such as advocating widening the suffrage. This periodical was published continuously between 1802 and 1836. In a half calf binding, with cloth covered boards. With cloth endpapers. Externally, excellent. Internally, firmly bound. Pages significantly age toned due to paper type, with spotting and handling marks throughout, and minor losses of paper to perimeters of first and last few leaves. Instances of worming to head of three gatherings to centre of work, not affecting text. Good. book.

Contemporary three-quarter calf over cloth, raised bands and lettering piece to spine, marbled edges. Rubbing with wear to extremities, joints cracked near head, corners bumped, front hinges cracked, rear free endpaper partially detached. Occasional toning and light foxing. Data on the frontispiece suggests a publication date range of 1834 to 1837. The caption states "Sir Thomas Denman, Lord Chief Justice of King's Bench." Denman held this post from 1832-1850. The court became Queen's Bench after the coronation of Queen Victoria in 1837. Denman became Sir Thomas, a baron, in 1834. OCLC locates 6 print copies dated 1830 (2), 1836 (2) and 1845 (2). All state "New Edition, Revised, Corrected and Enlarged"; Our copy matches the collation of the copies dated 1836 and 1845. Another copy, which exists in microform, has the same statement, a different pagination and is dated 1800-99.
