In den WarenkorbThree colour woodblock prints, a triptych, panels loose, each approx 38.5 x 25.4cm, Japanese text (artist's signature? publisher's seal and date?) in the outer margin of the centre and right-hand panels and in the inner margin of the left-hand panel, slivers of paper tape strengthening the top margin to the verso of each print, pin-holes to the corners from previous display with loss to the lower right corners and the inner corner of the left-hand panel, paper a little dusty and soiled but overall in good condition. Wonderful satirical woodblocks with muted tonings, possibly from the composition for "Sumo wrestling match of Seven Lucky Gods" replacing the gods with actors as aging sumo wrestlers, surrounded by onlooking geisha and fellow actors in masks and costume. From the collection of the late John Caiger, lecturer in Asian studies, ANU.…

Originally published in 1932, this later posthumous edition woodblock print is a celebrated Shin-hanga landscape by Kawase Hasui (1883-1957). A lone boatman on Lake Matsue edges to shore against a dramatic sky with looming clouds, teeming rain, and with a vibrant lone willow tree. Hasui is regarded as one of the greatest artists of the Shin-hanga style and championed by the publisher Watanabe Shozaburo, a driving force behind the movement. Hasui is known for his beautiful landscape views, dubbed the "Hiroshige of Showa Era". In 1953 the Japanese government recognized Hasui as a Living National Treasure for his contribution to Japanese culture.…

In den WarenkorbThree colour woodblock prints, a triptych, panels loose, each 24 x 35.4cm, Japanese text in red (identifying the actors) and in yellow (identifying the roles) in the upper left of two panels and program title in the top right of the third panel, further text within in a red fish-shape in the lower right of the third panel, some offsetting of red ink on the first panel, but not affecting the main image, slivers of affixing tape to the verso of each print, some surface wear and abrasion (mainly to the verso), but the three images in very good, bright condition. Dramatic depiction of the famous Kabuki actors Onoe Kikugor? V (1844-1903) as Yosaburô and Onoe Matsusuke IV (1843-1928) playing the role of Kômori Yasu, in the 1892 staging of "Yowa Nasake Ukina no Yokogushi" (commonly called "Kirare Yosa"). Images such as these were collected by Kabuki fans of the day who bought woodblocks of their favourite actors and then had the prints made up into albums so that they could be enjoyed, much in the way poster books and other fan memorabilia of famous movie stars is enjoyed today. The artist Toyohara Kunichika (1835-1900) was acclaimed as one of "The Three Greats of Meiji Ukiyo-e". Many stories surround him including his boast that he had moved 100 times, which appears unlikely, but this claim combined with his hard drinking, womanising lifestyle and overall "live for the day" attitude all contributed to his colourful reputation. His work was very popular during his lifetime with his use of bright imported chemical dyes and his technique of focussing the image on the actors face combining to make up his individual style. (see 'Time Present and Time Past: Images of a Forgotten Master' by Amy Reigle Newland.) From the collection of the late John Caiger, lecturer in Asian studies, ANU.…

In den WarenkorbBlack and white woodblock print, 33 x 45.8cm, few small stains, a few small holes neatly repaired. A lively and attractive image. This fun-filled woodblock print is an advertisement for a visiting American circus to Japan in the early Meiji period (most likely around the 1870s). The main attraction is the equestrian feats, but other acrobatic entertainments, including trapeze and clown acts, are also featured. Seventeen American names with six others are listed in the left bottom corner. Western circuses, such as Risley Circus and Chiarini Circus, were very popular in Japan during the Meiji period.…

In den Warenkorb[Korea ca. 1940-50's]. DeLuxe sheet, color woodblock printed in 7 colors on Korean "Hanja/Hanji," handmade mulberry paper 34.8 x 45.7 cm., green cotton mounting, gold border, very nice example, unsigned as usual. . *** **** *** . . . A DELUXE GRAND BROADSHEET NINE-COLOR WOODBLOCK PRINT . . . . DEPICTING RURAL KOREAN LIFE STYLE AND ACTIVITIES . . * This is an exceptionally large single-broadsheet, nine-color woodblock print. Printed in brown, green, pink, dark brown, red, gray, ochre, yellow & black. Printing blocks of this size are quite rare and seldom used, therefore it was a Deluxe example, honoring the peasant and their rural life style. . The scene depicts a typical Korean farm house, with several family members engaged in typical activities. . From the upper left, progressing downwards: a. Man at the wooden loom weaving cloth b. Woman in open Cheollik, preparing to nurse a young child c. A woman sewing a red cloth d. A woman holding a tea pot e. Two men working on a wood table or stretching fibers f. A man holding a plate g. A man holding an object h. A woman in the kitchen, cooking . The domestic rural scent shows a "bird's eye view" of the inside of the fenced yard and interiors of the houses with grass [rice straw] thatched roof. The entry gate is open showing a lively scene of family members at their daily toil and tasks. . *** RARITY: This example is an unusually large, Deluxe broadside, with nine colors. Due to its grand size and large number of different colors, they remain obscure and illusive. Early examples of this size of "Korean Folk Art" are seldom found on the market. . *** CONDITION: . The work was formerly adhered to a kind of Korean screen with a wood backing, the print not adhered, but 'free floating' which is typical of this native Korean mounting technique. The print was expertly and gently removed from the wooden backing without issues to the print or mounting. . The edge of the green cotton cloth mounting was adhered to the frame edges, and remains the original vivid 'mandarin green' color, this cloth was also gently 'lifted' and removed from the frame. There is some of the usual fading to the mounting cloth facing the front, giving the overall impression of an 'aged' work. This cloth can be easily removed when reframing, or kept intact and matted anyway one desires. There is a small stain in the lower left mounting material, which does not detract from the image whatsoever. This could be either trimmed or matted out. . At the edge of the print is a 2mm. gold paper border, over which the green mounting cloth was applied. Overall quite an impressive look! . The woodblock print verso is clean, without mark or stain, there are what appears to be three period very minor mends, restorations or reinforcements, impossible to know. These are not visible from the recto, otherwise the print is free from any detractions or negative issues. . The print is by and large clean, a few minor colorless scuffs else a very attractive example. . The work is suitable for matting, framing and display. This print could be easily rolled for shipping. . Please review the color photos posted to our website. . *** REFERENCES: Please see various Emille Museum catalogs for similar items or on the essence of Korean folk paintings, subjects prints & that genre. . ***. …
