Eight charming colour woodblock pochibukuro or miniature envelopes, each measuring 9.5 x 6cm presented in a folded paper packet with delightful colour image on upper cover. A set of eight woodblock printed pochibukuro - miniature envelopes used in Japan for giving money or other gifts at New Year - probably dating from the late Meiji period. The envelopes feature images of hagoita, the decorated wooden battledores used in hanetsuki, a game similar to badminton, traditionally played at New Year to drive away evil spirits. Because of their special association with the holiday, images of hagoita were often incorporated into the envelopes used to present otoshidama - New Year's money gifts for children.
