War Diaries is the contemporaneous record of the late Major Andre Dennison's service as OC A Company 2nd Battalion Rhodesian African Rifles (RAR) from its formation on 1 October 1975 to his untimely death in June 1979 by friendly fire at the hands of a BSAP constable during a contact at the Zimbabwe Ruins Hotel. Dennison was a career British officer who, having completed his 22 years in the British Army including action at Suez, in Malaya, and Borneo and Northern Ireland with the SAS, signed on with the Rhodesian Army in 1975. Having commanded indigenous troops in Malaya he was a natural choice to command the black soldiers of the RAR. It is a day by day account of combat and contact in the harsh and savage environment of the Bush War with the insurgent terrorists of ZANLA/ZIPRA. As a war diary and not a personal diary it is largely devoid of sentiment and largely matter of fact though for a man who was clearly a tough soldier there are moments where tragedy is hinted at such as his description of the death in action of one of his favorite subalterns 2/LT Bruce Thompson - Dennison writes simply ' there was no finer soldier in the Rhodesian Army, so that means any army'. One can imagine that losses like this affected Dennison more deeply than the matter of fact style of the narrative would suggest but then this is a unit diary, intended to be read by others and not for private reflection - one can imagine that this if it came was recorded elsewhere.

Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine. 1st Edition. 400pp, 142 photographs.Near Fine in Near Fine DJ. No Markings. The War Diaries of Andre Dennison recount the activities of Selous Scouts 'A' Company of 2RAR during the bush war in Rhodesia, in the form of the diaries kept by its OC in the period 1976 to 1979. The diaries were brought to the attention of Dr. Wood during his research for a history of Rhodesia. When the Rhodesian Army recruited André Dennison in 1975, it could not have chosen better. It secured the services of a hardened veteran of four of the minor wars of the 1950s and 1960s - the Suez débâcle; the Cyrpus Emergency; the confrontation with Indonesia as well as events as we have seen them in Northern Ireland. Dennison had been a paratrooper, a member of the SAS, a company commander and a training officer. He had served with the Malawi Rifles and had gained experience with African troops. Thus he was the most appropriate choice asd the first Officer Commanding f 'A' Company of the new 2nd Battalion of the Rhodesian African Rifles. André Dennison quickly acquired the reputation of being one of the most forceful of the Fire Force commanders. He kept a meticulous record of the daily life of his 'A' Company, writing up his war diaries every night and eventually, when convalescing from wounds, transcribing them into a single volume. He wrote in the dry, humourous style of the professional soldier, sparing little pity for his enemy while displaying deep affection and admiration for his men as he chronicled their exploits. He was diffident about his own achievements which were to win him three awards for bravery. André Dennison affords the reader a unique insight into the life of a black infantry company in the traumatic last five years of the long insurgency war in Rhodesia. Dennison's text is enriched by contributions from the records of the Selous Scouts supplied by Lieutenant-Colonel Ron Reid-Daly. Accordingly, when Dennison writes of being called out by the Scouts to a sighting, Reid-Daly reveals the background to the incident and, in many instances, adds to the outcome. Ron Reid-Daly also provides a review of the use of Fire Force, that potent combination of helicopters, paratroops and infantry. There was no diary entry recording Major André Dennison's death in action in June 1979. It was the end of the diary.

Softcover. Zustand: AS NEW COPY! HISTORY -Founded on 35 years of research into o the post-1945 Anglo-Rhodesian history, this book complements Richard Wood'sÂThe Welensky Papers: A History of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland: 1953-1963 (1983)ÂandÂSo Far and No Further! Rhodesia's bid for independence during the retreat from empire: 1959-1965 (2005). OfÂSo Far, Michael Hartnack wrote that 'Once in a lifetime comes a book which must force a total shift in the thinking person's perception of an epoch, and of all the prominent characters who featured in it.'A Matter of Weeks Rather than MonthsÂrecounts the action and reaction to Ian Smith's unilateral declaration of Rhodesia's independence, the second such declaration since the American one of 1776. It examines the dilemmas of both sides. Smith's problem was how to legitimise his rebellion to secure crucial investment capital, markets, trade and more. His antagonist, the British Prime Minister, Harold Wilson, was determined not to transfer sovereignty until Rhodesia accepted African majority rule in common with the rest of Africa. Given British feelings for their Rhodesian kith and kin and Rhodesia's landlocked position, Wilson eschewed the use of force. He could only impose sanctions but hoped they would defeat Smith 'in a matter weeks rather than months'. The Rhodesians, however, evaded the sanctions with such success that they forced Wilson to negotiate a settlement. Negotiations were nevertheless doomed because the self-confident Rhodesians would not accept a period of direct British rule while rapid progress to majority rule was made or the imposition of restraints on powers they had possessed since gaining self-government in 1923. In tune with their allies in the African National Congress of South Africa, the Rhodesian or Zimbabwean African nationalists had already adopted the Marxist concept of the 'Armed Struggle' as a means to power. Sponsored by the Communist Bloc, its surrogates and allies, they began a series of armed incursions from their safe haven in Zambia. Although bloodily and easily repulsed, they would learn from their mistakes as the Rhodesian forces would discover in the 1970s. Consequently, this is a tale of sanctions, negotiations and counter-insurgency warfare.Read Lesspp. 772, maps. #190425 (Over-weight and over-size item.) Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. 1st Edition. First Edition, hardcover in very good condition with very good DJ. Very minor tropical foxing on flyleaves, text otherwise clean, crisp and bright with no markings. Binding tight. 308 pages. No DVD.6 x 0.7 x 9 inches. Many maps and photos. This is without question the most thoroughly researched historical work available on "everything" related to Fire Force operations in the Rhodesian War. Included here is a plethora of maps, b&w photos, colour photos, prints, graphs, a glossary, an index. It's likely that Fire Force operations comprised the majority of lethal contacts with terrorists operating in and around Rhodesia during the war. Wood's "Counterstrike" is easily one of the best historical sources available on the Rhodesian War. So if you're a serious student of this conflict, this is a "must read".
