Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Clearly the person who wrote this book is an insect enthusiast; they titled the book: "A World of Little Wonders, or, Insects at Home," and they mean insects in their homes and not yours or mine! The book was written by the Rev. J.G. Wood and the subtitles read: "Being a Popular Account of All those Insects which are Useful or Destructive, and Minutely Describing Their Structure, Habits and Transformations." The title page also says: "With upwards of Seven Hundred Figures" by E.A. Smith and J.B. Zwecker; and engraved by G. Pearson. The illustrations open with a gorgeous full-color chromolithograph featuring butterflies, dragonflies and other flying insects (see the photo of the list of illustrations, for the legend of the many plates. All the rest of the many illustrations, especially the 20 plates, are without coloring and the authors encourage the book reader "to colour the page-size engravings." Condition: This book is in very good condition. The hard covers are generally clean, perhaps a bit dust-dulled but with bright gilt decorations and titles. The corners and spine tips have been very lightly bumped. I noted a small hole in the edge of the rear gutter, probably an insect having its revenge! Inside, the book is unmarked and the interior pages and many plates are clean and bright, without toning or foxing. There is a crease due to a misfold, probably during printing, of two of early pages of the Table of Contents. Both hinges are intact but the binding is cracked at the half-title page and the front covers seem a bit loose (I will see if my expert bookman can repair this issue) but overall, the binding feels tight and sound.
