Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - H. H. Holmes - America's First Notorious Serial Killer Real Name: Herman Webster Mudgett - H. H. Holmes was an alias. Born May 16, 1861 in Gilmanton, New Hampshire. Holmes is one of the most infamous figures in American criminal history, often called America's first modern serial killer and first big-city serial killer. He was a con artist, bigamist, and medical school graduate who moved to Chicago in the 1880s. There he built a three-story building in the Englewood neighborhood, which would later become known in newspapers as the 'Murder Castle.' The Murder Castle: >After his arrest, sensational newspaper reports claimed the building was designed as a killing factory, with soundproof rooms, trap doors, chutes to the basement, a gas chamber, a crematorium, and a dissecting table. Many of those details were exaggerated by the press, but police did find evidence of murder and fraud. His Crimes: >His method was usually financial - he would take out life insurance policies on victims, swindle them, then kill them. Capture and Death: >He was tried for only one murder, that of Benjamin Pitezel, convicted, and sentenced to death. He was hanged on May 7, 1896 in Philadelphia. He was 34.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The TrapThe air hung thick and heavy, a miasma of stale cigarette smoke, cheap weed, and something else. something indefinably rotten. It clung to the peeling wallpaper, to the stained mattress shoved against the wall, to the very fabric of the room itself. This wasn't just a dilapidated apartment in Harlem; it was a tomb, a suffocating cage built from neglect and despair. Rose-Lee, her eyes sharp and assessing, took it all in, the grime, the shadows, the sense of impending doom that settled like a shroud. Across the room, Alice huddled beneath a threadbare blanket, her eyes wide and fearful, a stark contrast to Rose-Lee's steely gaze. Dollar, their captor, paced like a caged animal. His movements were jerky, unpredictable, fueled by the relentless buzz of crack cocaine coursing through his veins. Sweat beaded on his forehead, his eyes darted nervously, reflecting the paranoia that gripped him. He wasn't just high; he was unraveling, a frayed rope threatening to snap at any moment. The air crackled with his volatile energy, a palpable tension that tightened the already suffocating atmosphere. He muttered to himself, a stream of incoherent ramblings punctuated by the occasional curse, his voice a low growl that vibrated in the confined space. The apartment was a testament to urban decay. The paint peeled from the walls in ragged strips, revealing layers of grime beneath. The floorboards groaned underfoot, a symphony of creaks and sighs that mirrored the building's slow, agonizing decline. A single bare bulb hung precariously from the ceiling, casting harsh shadows that danced and writhed across the walls, creating an unsettling, almost hallucinatory effect. The air was thick with the scent of mildew and decay, a constant reminder of the neglect and squalor that had overtaken this once-proud building. Outside, the city roared, a cacophony of sirens, car horns, and distant shouts. The sounds filtered through the thin walls, a stark contrast to the oppressive silence within. It was a constant, jarring reminder of the world beyond their prison walls, a world they desperately longed to return to. But escape seemed impossible, a distant, unattainable dream. Dollar's unpredictable moods and the ever-present threat of violence made any attempt at escape fraught with deadly risks. Rose-Lee's mind, however, worked tirelessly, a relentless engine churning through possibilities. She was a survivor, honed by the harsh realities of the streets, possessing a cunning intelligence that belied her youthful appearance. She studied Dollar's every move, looking for weaknesses, for cracks in his fragile composure. She observed the way he clutched his drugs, the tremor in his hands, the wild gleam in his eyes. It was a dance of predator and prey, a silent battle of wills played out in the confines of their crumbling apartment.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Theodore Robert Bundy remains one of the most infamous serial killers in American history, not only for the brutality of his crimes, but for the stark contrast between his public image and his private life. Born Theodore Robert Cowell on November 24, 1946 in Burlington, Vermont, Bundy was by all outward appearances charming, intelligent, and ambitious. A law student, former psychology major at the University of Washington, and one-time political campaign worker, he used his clean-cut looks and articulate personality to gain trust and avoid suspicion. Between 1974 and 1978, Bundy carried out a series of murders, kidnappings, and assaults across seven states - Washington, Oregon, Utah, Idaho, Colorado, California, and Florida. He typically targeted young women, often college-aged, luring them by feigning injury or impersonating an authority figure before abducting them to a second location. While he confessed to 30 homicides shortly before his execution, law enforcement believes the true number of victims may be higher. Bundy's case became a national spectacle for two reasons. First, he escaped from custody twice in Colorado in 1977, continuing his killing spree while on the run. Second, his trials in Florida in 1979 and 1980 were among the first to be televised nationally, turning the courtroom proceedings into a media event and cementing his notoriety in American culture. After years of denials and manipulation of the legal system, Bundy was convicted of multiple murders, including the 1978 Chi Omega sorority house murders at Florida State University and the murder of 12-year-old Kimberly Leach. He was executed in the electric chair at Florida State Prison on January 24, 1989. The story of Ted Bundy is studied not just as a criminal case, but as a case study in criminal psychology, forensic science, media coverage of crime, and the dangerous misconception that evil is always easily recognizable.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - This book provides the most comprehensive and detailed formal account to date of the evolution of French syntax. It makes use of the latest formal syntactic tools and combines careful textual analysis with a detailed synthesis of the research literature to provide a novel analysis of the major syntactic developments in the history of French. The empirical scope of the volume is exceptionally broad, and includes discussion of syntactic variation and change in Latin, Old, Middle, Renaissance, and Classical French, and standard and non-standard varieties of Modern French. Following an introduction to the general trends in grammatical change from Latin to French, Sam Wolfe explores a wide range of phenomena including the left periphery, subject positions and null subjects, verb movement, object placement, negation, and the makeup of the nominal expression. The book concludes with a comparative analysis of how French has come to develop the unique typological profile it has within Romance today. The volume will thus be an indispensable tool for researchers and students in French and comparative Romance linguistics, as well as for readers interested in grammatical theory and historical linguistics more broadly.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - This volume offers a range of synchronic and diachronic case studies in comparative Germanic and Romance morphosyntax. These two language families, spoken by over a billion people today, have played a central role in linguistic research, but many significant questions remain about the relationship between them. Following an introduction that sets out the methodological, empirical, and theoretical background to the book, the volume is divided into three parts that deal with the morphosyntax of subjects and the inflectional layer; inversion, discourse pragmatics, and the left periphery; and continuity and variation beyond the clause. The contributors adopt a diverse range of approaches, making use of the latest digitized corpora and presenting a mixture of well-known and under-studied data from standard and non-standard Germanic and Romance languages. Many of the chapters challenge received wisdom about the relationship between these two important language families. The volume will be an indispensable resource for researchers and students in the fields of Germanic and Romance linguistics, historical and comparative linguistics, and morphosyntax.…
