Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. 12 x 9.25", printed cream wraps, (4pp). Light soiling, creasing, edge tears else good. Stamped "Standard Edition". Songwriter Jacques Wolfe, 1896-1973, was born in Romania and emigrated with his family to New York as a child and attended the Institute of Musical Art, the forerunner to the Julliard School. It was during the service in WWI where he played the clarinet in a military band that he was first exposed to Negro folk songs. From the liner notes of "Sad Song In The Air", a 1934 song he collaborated on with Langston Hughes: "Transferred South Jacques Wolfe made his first direct contact with native negro music. The simplicity, sincerity and spontaneity of the folk songs struck a responsive chord in the composer, and he decided, then, to develop the spiritual as an art form. 'De Glory Road' was his first effort in this vein, and it was immediately recognized and accepted as a brilliant conception of the negro spiritual in a new form". Paul Robeson was the first to perform 'De Glory Road', he sang it in his 1933 film "Emperor Jones". A sampling from "Dark Lullaby": "Ain't no time for babies to look on wid open eyes, Young 'uns got to close 'em Den comes mammy's lullabies". Very SCARCE.
