This is the fourth and final series of short-term feeding studies using diets containing a large percentage of a single foodstuff sterilized with ionizing radiation. This series of investigations has been conducted jointly by the Medical Nutrition Laboratory, the University of Colorado, and the Quartermaster Food and Container Institute. The foods discussed in this paper are turkey, bread, strawberries, and corn. The objective was to determine whether sterilization of foodstuffs by ionizing radiation produces toxic substances which might affect the consumption of food and the growth rate of the animal subjects. On the basis of these experiments, recommendations were made concerning the clearance for human organoleptic testing of irradiated foods. Evidence was obtained that irradiated turkey causes a decrease in growth when compared with non-irradiated turkey. In response to an observation of poor nutritional status among enlisting men, the National Academy of Sciences and the National Research Council created a force that defines the minimum need and safety margin for nutrient intake. The task force specified a tentative set of allowances, intended to address the nutritional needs of civilians and military personnel. These allowances eventually became the Food and Nutrition Board's Recommended Dietary Allowances. In 1958, the Army's Medical Nutrition Laboratory in Chicago, IL, and the Research and Development Department of Fitzsimons General Hospital in Denver, CO, were combined to form the U.S. Army Medical Research and Nutrition Laboratory (USAMRNL). This institution quickly became known as the nation's leading laboratory for human nutrition research and conducted broad and extensive studies. Meanwhile, in 1955, the Interdepartmental Committee on Nutrition for National Defense (ICNND) was established to address nutritional problems.
