L'édition originale de cette précoce monographie de la ville de Ballarat (Etat de Victoria) parut en 1870. Cette cité avait été fondée seulement en 1850 à partir d'un ancien campement indigène, et son développement spectaculaire dut beaucoup à l'exploitation de gisements aurifères. Elle forme actuellement la troisième ville de l'Etat. L'ouvrage est très important aussi pour la connaissance de l'Eurêka stockade des années 1854-55. William Bramwell Withers (1823-1913), né en Angleterre, émigra au Natal en 1849, puis dans l'Etat de Victoria en 1852. William Bramwell Withers (18231913), born in England, emigrated to Natal in 1849, then to Victoria in 1852.
