Illustrated with several tables and nearly one hundred woodcut images, some full-page. Among them is a large world map (f. 78r) showing America, along with three small. First edition. In later full leather with a gilt spine, title vignette, gilt turn-ins, and red-tinted edges. Marbled endpapers. ff. [10 (misbound)], 284 [i.e. 283 (several mispaginated, some misbound)] [1 (woodcut ill.)]. [Complete]. A scarce Portuguese treatise on astronomy, navigation, and geography, with early references to America and Asia. Manoel de Figueiredo's Chronographia: Reportorio dos Tempos is a comprehensive work compiling astronomical, calendrical, navigational, and geographical knowledge, with references to America and Asia. It follows the tradition of earlier Iberian Reportorio dos Tempos, a type of encyclopedic work or almanac that combined astronomical, calendrical, and astrological knowledge. The book provides detailed descriptions of celestial motions, the structure of the universe, and divisions of time, including religious calendars with saints' feast days. Additionally, it discusses meteorological phenomena, eclipses and their astrological implications, as well as practical information on navigation, tides, and agricultural practices. Intended for a broad readership, it contributed to the widespread popularity of such works (Valleriani 2020). Figueiredo's Reportorio is distinguished by its integration of practical mathematical applications, including instructions on the construction and use of navigational instruments such as the balestilha (cross-staff) and geometric quadrants. His work was essential for pilots, scholars, and mariners, synthesizing practical navigation with theoretical knowledge. The book is structured into six main sections, covering Chronographia (chronology), Astronomia (astronomy), Geographia (geography), Astrologia (astrology), Computo Calendario (calendar calculations), and a sixth book (Do radio astronomico), dedicated to the fabrication and use of mathematical instruments such as the balestilha (cross-staff), a geometric quadrant, and various types of clocks. The text provides detailed solar and lunar cycle tables, designed for practical applications in calendar-making and eclipse prediction up to the year 1630. It explains the determination of longitude and latitude, essential for maritime navigation. Parts 2-6 are richly illustrated with corresponding woodcuts. The title page of the second part features a large woodcut armillary sphere, and the section is further illustrated with zodiac signs, figural representations of the planets, and other scientific diagrams. This chapter includes a large, nearly full-page world map depicting the classical division of the Earth into five climatic zones (f. 78r). America appears as a distinct landmass in the western hemisphere but is crudely shaped, while Asia is merged with Africa, showing prominent bodies of water on the continents. The Geographia section includes three smaller world maps: the first illustrating wind directions (f. 120v), the second explaining the Earth's spherical shape and its division into hemispheres (f. 128v), and the third likely indicating meridians and reference points (such as the Canary Islands and Cape Verde) for navigation (f. 140r). The Astrologia section contains a full-page illustration of the Zodiac Man, while the Computo Calendario section is illustrated with schematic moon faces representing different eclipse phases. The final section includes illustrations explaining the use of the cross-staff, the quadrant, and sundials. A significant portion of the Reportorio is devoted to geographical descriptions, offering insights into European knowledge of the world in the early 17th century. It describes the four known continents and references major colonial centers in the Americas, Africa, and Asia (ff. 208-209). Some charts indicate the start dates of the hottest period of summer (dog days) in major cities worldwide, while others provide location charts based on the Lisbon meridian. America is mentioned on f. 130, stating that the discovery of the New World, driven by royal ambition, revealed vast riches previously unknown to much of the world. The newly explored territories include Brazil, Peru, and the Indies (New Spain). To the north lies Terra Nova (Newfoundland), while to the south, extending to the Strait of Magellan, the text mentions the Caribbean islands, such as Cuba and Santo Domingo. The Río de la Plata region is noted for its wealth in silver, sugar, and other valuable commodities. Additionally, the book references the Amazon River, which flows into the ocean near one degree south of the equator. The text also outlines Asia's borders, islands, and rivers, mentioning Java Minor, Luconia, New Guinea, Ceylon, Mindanao, Borneo, and major rivers such as the Euphrates and Ganges. Asia is described as a fertile land rich in spices, silks, and other goods. It is home to Anatolia, Syria, Arabia, Persia, India, China, and Tartary, with key islands such as the Philippines, Japan, and Sumatra. Manoel de Figueiredo (1568-1630) was a Portuguese cosmographer, mathematician, and astronomer. His work was deeply influenced by Pedro Nunes, and he contributed significantly to the organization and dissemination of mathematical and navigational knowledge. His work reflects the intellectual transformation of early modern Europe, where empirical observation and practical sciences were gradually overtaking medieval scholastic traditions. He was also known for his Hidrographia (1608) and Roteiro, e Navegação das Índias Ocidentais (1609), one of the first Portuguese roteiros-collections of sailing directions-detailing voyages from Lisbon to Portuguese outposts in the East and West Indies. Extremely scarce, with only one record on RBH in a 1926 Maggs catalogue. IB locates only 14 copies worldwide, of which nine are held in Portugal, two. Woodcut armorial device on the title page, with a few woodcut initials throughout. Illustrated with several tables and nearly one hundred woodcut images, some full-page. Among them is a large world map (f. 78r) showing America, along with three small (illustrator).…

It is the first in a series of 16 papers Whewell made for the Royal Society. It contains the first printed cotidal world-map."Whewell took over the subject of mapping cotidal lines from Lubbock with entusiasm. He exercised the pioneer's privilege of coining new words and phrases appropriate to his subject. Many failed to stick, some phrases of Whewell's origin still occasionally used are: 'age of the tides', 'luni-tidal interval', 'semi-menstrual inequality' etc, etc.Whewell's initial cotidal map for the world ocean was presented in his first paper of 1833 (the paper offered). By his own admission, it was entirely preliminary and tentative, what nowadays might be called a "strawman", to stimulate discussionm. He later (1836) suggested smll modifications, especially near the coast of North America" these were incorporated in an 'improved' world map by G.B. Airy in his celebrated tratise on "Tides and wave", (Cartwright in "Tides. A Scientific History", pp.110-112.).…

Light rubbing in one place upper margin, a little worming and small closed tear in lower margin. Sheet has been backed with washi. Good copy. This late Edo period kawaraban print provides a wealth of information on the diverse aspects of sexual behaviour and attraction between men and women during this era. Following the traditional kawaraban style, the print offers a detailed and varied glimpse into the lives of the time. A fascinating map of Edo's red-light districts, playfully drawn with phallus-shaped lines, occupies the lower centre. Eight different types of sexual toys are displayed on the left, while service fees for brothels are listed above the map. The print even delves into compatibility between the sexes based on zodiac signs, along with methods for predicting a baby's sex before birth. "Somnium" pp. 3-178 having geographical woodcuts in the text and a woodcut map of the old world. Printers woodcut-device on title. Fourth Lyon-edition of Macrobius's 2 main works. In the "Somnium" he uses passages of Cicero's work as mere suggestions to construct a treatise on Neoplatonic philosophy - the most satisfactory and widely read Latin compendium on Neoplatonism that existed during the Middle Ages. Macrobius was one of the leading popularizers of science in the Latin West, and his conception of the world geography as an equatorial and meridional ocean (depicted in the book) dividing the earth into four quarters, dominated scientific thinking on world geography in the Middle Ages. - His "Saturnalia" deals with Roman feasts in form of table-talk at a banquet in Rome, giving information of food and drink and their preparation (Vicaire 986 (ed.1492, Simon p. 547 (ed. 1492)). and is fascinatingly rich in philological, historical, antiquarian and scientific lore, throwing a clear light on the interests and taste of the period. - Adams vol. In den WarenkorbVery good. Some areas of soiling; few mends in margin and at centerfold not impacting image. Size 17.75 x 21 Inches. This is an elegant and detailed 1759 world map by Johann Matthias Hase and Georg Maurice Lowitz, contributors to the firm of Homann Heirs. The map was first issued in 1746, reflecting the best available cartographic detail of the day both from French and Russian sources. The present example was updated c. 1759 to reflect the discoveries of Bering and Chirikov according to the 1754 Müller map, confirming the separation of the continents of Asia and North America. Müller's Updates The 1746 edition of this map showed a vast, unmarked space between the North American coast at about 45° North and the northeast of Russia at the Arctic Circle. Here, this has been significantly updated to include the detail revealed in Gerhard Friedrich Müller's 1754 Nouvelle Carte Des Decouvertes Faites Par Des Vaisseaux Russess Aux Cotes Inconnues De L'Amerique Septentrionale . Müller's map was the first to reveal the discoveries of Bering and Chirikov, and while Homann's map does not include their voyages' tracks, the combination of their reported discoveries and the speculative lands connecting them hails from Müller. That map, as here, indicated the coastline found by Gvosdev in 1730. The inclusion of this new cartography is particularly significant in that it confirmed for the first time, based on observation, that Asia and North America were separate continents. An Elegant, Up-to-Date Map The map blends rich decorative flourish and abundant scientific detail. Even the cartouches, hitherto a visual arena for allegory and political favor, here celebrate the natural world, including depictions of coral likely derived from the 1731 work of Englishman Mark Catesby. Cartographically, the map encapsulates the best mapping of the world before the voyages of Cook. Australia and New Zealand rely on Tasman's reports of the previous century. North America reflects De l'Isle's mapping of the Mississippi, the Great Lakes, and the West Coast, including a peninsular California. The sea between Korea and Japan appears here as 'Mare Oriental Minus' (The Lesser Eastern Sea). The Subordinate Charts In addition to the main hemispheres, the map includes an array of smaller hemispheres derived from earlier work by Lowitz. These include northern and southern projections, as well as two projections centered on Nuremberg and its antipodes. Two additional diagrams illustrate the parts of the globe directly illuminated by the Sun at the winter and summer solstices and its presumed effect on the thickness of the atmosphere. Publication History and Census This map was first engraved for inclusion in Homann Heirs atlases in 1746. According to C. Sandler in Johann Baptista Homann, die Homännischen Erben, Matthäua Seutter und Ihre Landkarten , Homann Heirs printed a Planiglobium both in 1746 and in 1759. It is reasonable to assign that latter date to this state of the map, although there were also later printings of the Homann Heirs atlases, and later editions of this map may exist. The map appears on the market in both its 1746 and its later states with some regularity, but since it is virtually always erroneously cataloged with the 1746 date without regard to the map's content, it is difficult to determine the relative scarcity of its states. In den WarenkorbVery good. Minor splits at fold intersections and fold lines, closed and professionally repairedonverso. Size 29 x 40 Inches. A scarce, large-format 1943 Japanese Serizawa Keigo World War II map of the world, with insets focusing on Southeast Asia. The map implicitly celebrates Japan's wartime empire, near its furthest extent at this time, in particular the 'East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere' that was meant to replace Western colonialism in Asia. A Closer Look The main world map at top is centered on Japan and the Pacific Ocean. Reflecting Japan's increasing familiarity with and orientation towards the sea, which predated but was strengthened by the Pacific War, bathymetric shading is included, as are other maritime features such as coral reefs and shoals. On land, a variety of features, including railways, major flight routes (dashed red lines), oil deposits, mines, hot springs, the Great Wall of China, and famous historical and cultural sites are indicated. Areas occupied by the Japanese military are outlined in red, though not the occupied parts of mainland China, as the country was nominally ruled by a pro-Japanese 'reformed' government in Nanjing. The Japanese puppet states of Manchukuo and Mengjiang (????????) are similarly not marked as occupied, despite the strong Japanese military presence there. The map is also notable for including not only the constituent republics of the Soviet Union, but also regions and autonomous republics of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic, such as the Yakutskaya Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic (??????????) in Siberia. In a hypothetical conflict with the Soviet Union, a very real possibility at the time given the mini-war fought between the two countries in 1939 at Nomonhan / Khalkhin Gol, these regions could be the main theater of war and Japan would likely attempt to appeal to the autonomous aspirations of ethnic minorities in the Soviet Union to weaken their enemy, as was attempted in China. At bottom, two inset maps focus on Southeast Asia, most of which was occupied by Japan at this time and enlisted in its 'East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere' (?????). Meant as an alternative to Western colonialism, the notion initially gained some adherents in South and Southeast Asia, including anti-colonial activists such as Sukarno in Indonesia and Subhas Chandra Bose in India, but over time proved to be an empty promise. Given its desperate wartime shortages of resources and manpower, Japan proved to be even more exploitative than the colonizers they shunted off in 1941 and 1942. The Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere The Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere was an imperial concept created and promulgated for occupied Asian populations from 1940 through 1945 by the Empire of Japan. Announced by Japanese Foreign Minister Hachir? Arita on June 29, 1940, the Co-Prosperity Sphere was intended as a self-sufficient 'bloc of Asian nations led by the Japanese and free of Western powers.' It covered Southeast Asia, Eastern China, Manchuria, Japan, the East Indies, and parts of Oceania. The idea promoted the cultural and economic unity of East Asians, Southeast Asians, and Oceanians with the underpinning assumption that Japan, which had never been conquered and was the only Asian nation to fully modernize, was the 'Light of Asia.' Though the concept was regularly incorporated into propaganda distributed in occupied territories, it ultimately rang hollow as Japan forcefully requisitioned materials and workers as the war turned in favor of the Allies. Nevertheless, the Co-Prosperity sphere marked a high point of pan-Asianism, arguably helped strengthen anti-colonial movements going into the postwar period, and laid the groundwork for future relations between Japan and other Asian nations when a demilitarized Japan returned with investments instead of guns in the following decades.
