His masterpiece was Der Abenteuerliche Simplicissimus (1669), commonly referred to as Simplicissimus - a picaresque novel telling the adventures of a simple youth who becomes successively soldier, jester, bourgeois, robber, pilgrim, slave, and hermit; it gives a realistic picture of the havoc wrought in Germany by Thirty Years' War (1618-48).
