This catalogue is of an exhibition marking the tercentenary of Grimmelshausen's death, and looks both at the man and his times. His masterpiece was Der Abenteuerliche Simplicissimus (1669), commonly referred to as Simplicissimus - a picaresque novel telling the adventures of a simple youth who becomes successively soldier, jester, bourgeois, robber, pilgrim, slave, and hermit; it gives a realistic picture of the havoc wrought in Germany by Thirty Years' War (1618-48).
