In den WarenkorbFirst edition of the last Witchcraft Act, repealing the former acts of Elizabeth I and James I (and Mary of Scotland) against witchcraft, and declaring magic, witchcraft and sorcery fraudulent. The last person to be legally executed for witchcraft was the Scottish woman Janet Horne in 1727, but legal sentiment had by then absorbed Enlightenment thinking and rational explanation of all forms of magic. Punishment by death was replaced in the 1735 act by imprisonment of up to one year only, on the basis that witchcraft could no longer be considered a crime, merely a nuisance. In this volume, formerly belonging to the council of the City of Canterbury (Kent), it is interesting to find an old (perhaps early nineteenth-century) paper scrap marking the Witchcraft Act among the many other acts contained in the volume, together with a marginal pencil marking beside the shoulder note 'Persons pretending to exercise Witchcraft, tell Fortunes, or by crafty Science to discover stolen Goods'. Folio (285 × 175 mm), [4 pages], i.e. pp. [2], 161-2, including general title-page dated 1736 for acts passed in 1734-5, contained in a complete volume of acts of Parliament for those years. Contemporary calf, upper cover with the gilt supralibros of the City of Canterbury. Covers slightly worn with some some losses through stripping, the contents very fresh.

In den Warenkorb2 works in 1 volume. Two exceedingly rare pamphlets about the "Loudon possessions", a case of mass hysteria surrounding the supposed demonic possession of Ursuline nuns that took place in the western French town of Loudun in 1634. The affair led to the trial of a local priest, Urbain Grandier, who was accused of witchcraft. Interestingly, these two pamphlets are by an anonymous partisan of the accused priest. The possession cases began in 1632 when several nuns at the local Ursuline convent claimed to be possessed by demons. The nuns accused Grandier, a charismatic and controversial figure in Loudun, of casting spells on them and making them his witches. Grandier, who had gained the enmity of the powerful Cardinal Richelieu, was arrested and put on trial, despite a lack of evidence against him. The trial was riddled with corruption and political intrigue, and Grandier was ultimately found guilty and sentenced to death by burning at the stake. His execution took place on 18 August 1634.While 18th century accounts of the famous trial such as those by De La Menardaye were popular, contemporary accounts are almost unobtainable. Neither pamphlet has appeared in auction records, and there are very few institutional holdings. The spine and corners of the boards are rubbed, the title label is slightly chipped. Numbers in the upper corners of the leaves indicate that these two works were likely removed from a sammelband containing multiple works. Internally slightly browned, an older typed description has been mounted with tape to the recto of the first free flyleaf. Otherwise in good condition.l Ad 1: Caillet 4718; Coumont F7.1; WorldCat 467111589, 705771905 (7 copies); Yve-Plessis 1285; Ad 2: Coumont R31.1; WorldCat 1254612433 (2 copies); Yve-Plessis 1286; cf. for more information about Grandier and the Loudun Nuns, see: Robbins, The Encyclopedia of Witchcraft and Demonology, pp. 312-317; Both ads not in Barbier, Dictionnaire des ouvrages anonymes; Rosenthal, Bibliotheca Magica et Pneumatica; Thorndike (Grandier and the Ursulines only mentioned once in general, vol VIII p. 583); Ad 2 not in Caillet. In den Warenkorb4to (184 x 240 mm). 12 pp.; 8 pp. Bound together in modern marbled boards with morocco spine label lettered in gilt. Two exceedingly rare pamphlets about the "Loudon possessions", a case of mass hysteria surrounding the supposed demoniac possession of Ursuline nuns that took place in the western French town of Loudun in 1634. The affair led to the trial of a local priest, Urbain Grandier, who was accused of witchcraft. Interestingly, these two pamphlets are by an anonymous partisan of the accused priest. - The possession cases began in 1632 when several nuns at the local Ursuline convent claimed to be possessed by demons. His execution took place on 18 August 1634. - Rubbing to spine and corners, chipping to spine label. Old numbers to upper corners indicate these were likely removed once from a sammelband of tracts. Contents lightly toned, an old typed description laid down with tape to front free endpaper. - While 18th century accounts of the famous trial such as those by De La Menardaye were popular, contemporary accounts are almost unobtainable. Neither pamphlet has appeared in auction records, and there are very few institutional holdings.

Zustand des Schutzumschlags: dj. First U.K. Edition. Octavo. 22cm. Publisher's deep blue cloth titled in gilt to spine. Dustjacket. [xi]; 162pp. Light bumping and edgewear to extremities, otherwise sharp and strong, with a slight bow to the boards; internally clean; in a strong, solid dustjacket with some unsightly spotting and staining and a little marginal fraying and wear. A very good copy. Lethbridge's investigation into the history and traditions of modern witchcraft (if such a thing exists) benefits from an amount of contribution from actual contemporary witches, which is certainly an improvement on the general 'research' of the 60's and 70's which was much more interested in the 'dancing naked in the moonlight' aspects of magic and less in the 'as above, so below' theoreticals. This is what happens when rare bookdealers sell books to Jimmie Page. Lethbridge makes a credible attempt at a historical outline, and includes some folkloric sources that are generally overlooked in favor of the nearest pointy hat. Not terribly uncommon, but sought after.
