Nachdem er die Nutzbarkeit des Zederöls hervorgehoben hat, heisst es dann weiter: arboris autem eius sunt similes cupresseae foliaturae; materies vena directa Das Laubwerk dieses Baumes ist dem der Zypresse ähnlich. Das Holz zeigt gerade Fasern. So lautet Fensterbuchs Übersetzung, die ohne Zweifel richtig den Sinn wiedergibt. Aber wie ist die grammatische Konstruktion zu verstehen? V. Rose fand sie offenbar unverständlich, da er in seinen beiden Textausgaben ediert: arboris autem eius est similis cupresseae foliatura. Das ist ein recht harter Eingriff, aber zuzugeben ist, dass der überlieferte Text merkwürdig aussieht: man hätte wenigstens similes cupresseis (oder cupresso) foliaturae erwartet. In meiner Doktordissertation trat ich jedoch für die Richtigkeit der Überlieferung ein, in dem ich auf ähnliche syntaktische Erscheinungen hinwies. Ich meinte similis könnte ohne Einwirkung hinzugefügt worden sein ungefähr wie die Adjektive ohne Veränderung der Genitivus-qualitatis-Konstruktion hinzugefügt werden in Fällen wie viri maiores L annorum, fossa lata pedum X. Aber eine ganz klare Parallele war ich nicht imstande aufzuzeigen.
