Gibbs on the verso of the first blank with a lengthy handwritten inscription to William Knowles Cooper, then General Secretary of the YMCA. Bound in publisher's blue cloth stamped in gilt. The extremely scarce publisher's promotional broadside for this title is tipped-in at the front pastedown. Very Good, cloth lightly rubbed, hinges reinforced, small amount of paper repair to prelims, occasional pencil notation. Mifflin Gibbs' life was one of astounding accomplishment: born free in Philadelphia in 1823, he worked on the Underground Railroad, was a Black business owner during California's gold rush, was the first Black newspaper owner west of the Mississippi, the first elected Black official in British Columbia, the first Black judge to be elected in the US, and he served as consul to Madagascar from 1898 -1901. A scarce signed autobiography; auction records reveal only 6 copies offered for sale since 1922, none of which were signed or inscribed. Howes G35. Signed.…
