Hardcover. 2nd thus. 93 p.; 14 cm. The title of this edition forms the running head above the text in the Dublin review article [1st thus in 1894] [Wiseman's article appeared in Dublin review, v.7 (no.13) p.139-180, August 1839] Here, on p.36, Wiseman compares Anglicans to the Donatists: `St. Augustine has a golden sentence on this subject, which should be an axiom in theology: "Quapropter securus judicat orbis terrarum, bonos non esse qui se dividunt ab orbe terrarum, in quacumque parte orbis terrarum."' Note: "Wherefore, the entire world judges with security, that they are not good, who separate themselves from the entire world, in whatever part of the entire world." -- In his Apologia pro vita sua (1864, p. 212-13, abridged), John Henry Newman recalls his reaction: `For a mere sentence, the words of St. Augustine, struck me with a power which I never had felt from any words before. By these great words of the ancient Father, the theory of the Via Media was absolutely pulverized. I became excited at the view thus opened upon me. After a while, I got calm, and at length the vivid impression upon my imagination faded away. What I thought about it on reflection, I will attempt to describe presently. I had to determine its logical value, and its bearing upon my duty. Meanwhile, so far as this was certain, -- I had seen the shadow of a hand upon the wall. It was clear that I had a good deal to learn on the question of the Churches, and that perhaps some new light was coming upon me. He who has seen a ghost, cannot be as if he had never seen it. The heaven had opened and closed again. The thought for the moment had been, "The Church of Rome will be found right after all;" and then it had vanished. My old convictions remained as before.' Fair spotted mauve cloth, gilt top. Backstrip torn away. …

Traces of previous mounting along top of two central pages, and of stub along one edge, removal of which has caused a small hole (not affecting text). A letter to the publisher of his 'Essays on various subjects' (3 vols, 1853): ' sermons, I have "50 Heaven" "Means of salvation" being "49." | Either therefore our lists do not agree, or one of us has made a mistake. Please therefore to look back at my last letter, and see if I did not say I wished to have "44 Goodness of God | 50 Heaven | 51 Conclusion." | Now what is to be done with my 49 or your 50 - "Means of salvation? Either enlarge the volume by introducing 48 Salvation before The means of S. & 44 Goodness of God, or keep by 48 & 49. I have no objection to increase the vol. if you like: only I wish to get it out - so as to get Vol 3 forward. | Please let me have a line, & in the meantime I return proof. | Yours very sincerely &c | N. Demi-cuir. Zustand: Très bon. Tournai -Paris - Leipzig: H. Casterman, 1868. In-4°. 412pp. …

See his entry in the Oxford DNB. The recipient is the publisher Henry Blackett (1825-1871) of the leading London firm Hurst & Blackett, and the meeting was evidently to discuss terms, possibly for Wiseman's 'Recollections of the Last Four Popes', which the firm published in 1859. 1p, 8vo. Daly begins: 'I am sorry to trouble you by laying before you the Letters [not present] of a man of the name of Thomas Male - Bookseller & Bookbinder residing at St. Mary's, who has by representing himself as patronized by you got Credit from me to the Amount of £11 . 9 . 11 - and very shortly after declared himself Insolvent & has taken the benefit of the Act after putting me to some Costs.' He asks Wiseman to 'observe his Letter No. 2 which is in answer to mine requesting a reference as to character - this Letter to me stating that he lived at the Lodge of the College, by the desire of his Lordship, & for the convenience of Father Phelan, quite threw me off my guard, and I made no farther inquiry, but sent the Goods, conceiving that no man could be hardy enough to give such a prompt reference to such Gentlemen if he did not deserve the fullest confidence.' He is not writing to make 'any the most distant claim' on Wiseman: 'I only wish to shew that some how or other your name has been used by this man for, in my opinion, a fraud, & in the hope that you will not suffer this person to act in a similar way again.' He concludes by expressing himself 'fortunate, in escaping as I have done, with so small a loss & no disgrace - for under the full impression of the rectitude of the man I laid two of his Letters before two respectable Booksellers, Messrs. Bickers & Darling, requesting them to send him, if they had them, some of the Catholic Divinity & Catholic Books which he said were for the College, but fortunately for me, they declined sending them.' The BBTI states that Daly traded from before 1832 to 1855, and has him at these two London addresses before Greville Street: 14 Leicester Street, Leicester Square; 19 Red Lion Square. The BBTI also has Thomas Male trading at Duke Street, Birmingham, as bookbinder from before 1834 to after 1835.…

2pp., 4to. Bifolium. Very good, on lightly-aged paper. Docketted by Wiseman on reverse of second leaf: 'Bened[icti]ne Chapter | 1854'. The letter begins: 'My Lord Cardinal, | The First General Chapter of the English Benedictine Congregation since the Restoration of the Hierarchy having arrived at the conclusion of its deliberations, we have thought it incumbent upon us not to separate, without forwarding to Your Eminence the assurance of our profound and sincere respect.' Hodgson reports that the Benedictines praise 'the earnest and unceasing efforts which Your Eminence has displayed in forwarding the glorious work of the advancement of Religion in this island, so dear from the history of the past to the Children of St Benedict. From its earliest conversion under our Saxon ancestors, through the prosperous and brilliant days of its religious influence, in the midst too of its sorrows and struggles, and its persecutions even unto death, we have formed a portion of the Curch, adn have considered ourselves identified with its existence. And now that more hopeful days have dawned upon her, and she has been successful in extending her conquests and enlarging her boundaries, and gaining a greater freedom in her sphere of action, we cannot but rejoice at these glorious results'. He continues in the same vein, before congratulating Wiseman, adding that 'we must not withhold our sympathy, that any abandonment of duty on the part of those who ought to be cooperating with Your Eminence should be to you a source of anxiety or affliction'. Hodgson concludes by stating that they will increase their prayers, and 'Begging your Eminence's blessing upon the English Benedictine Congregation'. From the Wiseman papers.…
