A person who sentimentalizes love will have need to deny the wrath of God. He sees wrath in terms of human anger, and he is right in denying God's…wrath in the sense that we should not impute human anger to God. Another projects his feelings of anger on God and becomes a self-appointed dispenser of the wrath of God. In identifying his own anger with that of God he feels justified in punishing others. We may react against such a person or, if we feel deeply guilty, we may accept the punishment such a person has to offer us as a means of atoning for our guilt. Some persons get nothing from a church service if the preacher does not punish them severely; some get little or nothing the the preacher does not punish others but leaves them feeling self-righteous. The Bible gives deep insight into the problem of God's judgment. God has made man with freedom to accept or reject, to obey or disobey fundamental laws of life, to love or hate, to accept responsibility for himself or refuse it, and to make other such choices. The fact of experiences which can be described as judgment is not contrary to faith in the love of God. Judgment simply means that there is an underlying moral structure to life, and as one makes choices he places himself under judgment and determines the direction and outcome of his life.'
