Lorna Doone: A Romance of Exmoor by R. D. Blackmore is an 1869 historical romance set on wild 17th-century Exmoor during the era of Monmouth?s Rebellion. Narrated by the yeoman farmer John ?Jan? Ridd, it follows his father?s murder by the outlaw Doone clan, his secret love for the beautiful Lorna (raised among them but later revealed as a kidnapped noble heiress), political intrigue, the destruction of the Doones, a wedding-day shooting by the villainous Carver Doone, and a hard-won happy ending. The novel is prized for its vivid Exmoor landscapes, rural life, and West Country dialect. The Easton Press edition, first issued in 1971 and reprinted around 2013, is a deluxe leather-bound collector?s reprint of the 1943 Heritage Press version illustrated by John Austen with an introduction by John T. Winterich.
