Zustand: Good. Als with Harrow School engraved letterhead: "Winston Churchill thought it possible that you and Mrs. Moriarty might like to attend the seance at the Abbey. Likely an unpublished letter which contradicts Churchill's suposedly bad relations with the headmaster(s) at Harrow''.The Head Master of Harrow from 1885 to 1898 was Bishop James Edward Cowell Welldon."Winston Churchill left Harrow School in 1892 or 1893 after finishing his studies there, having attended from 1888 to 1892. Due to poor academic performance, particularly in mathematics, he did not graduate in the traditional sense but rather completed his time there before attending a "crammer" to prepare for the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst entrance exam.".Churchill's Situation in 1895: In 1895, a 20-year-old Winston Churchill was focused on his military career, having been gazetted to the Fourth Queen's Own Hussars on February 20, and was mourning the death of his father (January 24) and his nanny, Mrs. Everest (July 3)."After spending the first years of his life in Ireland -due to Lord Randolph, Churchill's father, assignment there-, and passing through different Boarding schools -St. George and Brunswick-, thirteen-year-old Churchill entered Harrow School, a very prestigious public school in Britain.During his time at Harrow Winston's conduct was problematic: he often talked back to the headmaster, he wasn't generous; he was not liked by his schoolmates, and he was bullied. Moreover, his parents still visited only rarely even though he continued to beg them to do so. He was miserable most of the time. This no doubt affected Winston's academics. As his housemaster put it, "As far as ability goes, he ought to be at the top of this form whereas he is at the bottom.".However, not all was bad at Harrow for young Winston. In this regard, Alan Saltman writes in No Peace With Hitler that "Churchill became accomplished in fencing, admired Napoleon, and relished learning about famous battles. He also took great interest in and derived great pleasure from the School Rifle Corps. Among other things, it was at Harrow that Churchill developed courage. He was willing to stand up to his teachers, and even correct them if they misquoted Shakespeare".Provenance: from a collection of letters in the estate of Donald James Mackay , who was born in the Hague on 22 December 1839. He was naturalised in the UK in 1877 and succeeded to the title of 11th Baron Reay in 1881.…
