Adolf August Winkelmann (1848-1911 in Jena), studierte in Bonn, Heidelberg und Berlin Mathematik und Physik und habilitierte sich dann an der Technischen Hochschule Aachen. Dort wurde er zunächst Assistent, 1877 dann ordentlicher Professor an der Akademie Hohenheim. Seit 1886 bis 1910 war Winkelmann ordentlicher Professor und Direktor des Physikalischen Instituts in Jena. Winkelmann arbeitete vor allem auf den Gebieten der Wärmeleitung in Gasen und der Diffusion von Gasen und Dämpfen, der spezifischen Wärme und der Lösungswärme von Flüssigkeiten, der anomalen Dispersion. Zusammen mit Otto Schott studierte er die Zusammensetzung verschiedener Gläser und zeigte wichtige Eigenschaften der Röntgenstrahlen auf. Glaser Nr. 46 +1022.
