An early and important English account of Morocco. Windus was the historian the embassy dispatched by George I in 1720, under Commodore Charles Stewart, to treat for a peace with the emperor of Morocco. The squadron sailed on 24 Sept. 1720, and in the following May a conference was held between the ambassador's party and the Basha Hamet Ben Ali Ben Abdallah at Tetuan. A treaty of peace, by which piracy was prohibited and the English prisoners released, was signed at Ceuta in January 1721, and Windus thereupon returned to England in Stewart's flagship, the Dover. Windus utilised the four months he spent on land in 'Barbary' to collect materials for an account of the Moors, and in 1725, with a dedication to 'James, earl of Berkley, vice-admiral of England.' First German edition, translated from the original English (London 1725) by F.C. Weber. John Windus participated in an expedition led by Commodore Charles Stewart in 1720 to secure a peace treaty with the emperor of Morocco, Ismail Igb Sharif. The following year a treaty between Britain and Morocco was signed at Tétouan. At that time many Europeans were imprisoned in Morocco because of piracy, but thanks to the peace agreement many English prisoners were released. An important early English account of Morocco, by a writer selected by George I to accompany a squadron charged with entreating peace with the emperor, Mawlay Isma'il. Windus had four months, between the signing of a peace treaty in January 1721 and a conference in May to compile documents for this book. According to the preface, Windus included only observations from his direct experience, or from reliable sources. While there had been a number of accounts of Morocco by English writers of the late seventeenth-century, Windus was unusual in lacking moralising commentary. The book was a success, entering numerous editions (including an almost immediate unauthorised Dublin edition), and was later compiled into The History of the Long Captivity and Adventures of Thomas Pellow in South Barbary (1739).
