he Alps occupy a large proportion of the territory of Austria. Numerous plants have found their home in this mountain range. They are seen, observed, sometimes admired or photographed. For those who would like to know the name of the plant, this book should help it is a first introduction to getting to know alpine plants. Since this book is intended to be a lightweight addition to the backpack, it is not intended to be exhaustive. But the authors have tried to include the most common and the most conspicuous plants, even if some are notoriously difficult to photograph. The arrangement by colour allows a quick search, and only occasionally is this principle relaxed to juxtapose similar species. For the German and scientific names the authors have consistently adhered to the standard of the Exkursionsflora für Österreich, Liechtenstein und Südtirol, 3rd edition, 2008, in order to facilitate comparability. That reference work will provide more information for those who want to know more about our flora. The listed features are selected to allow comparison with similar species. The small maps should give a rough impression of where the plants are to be found. Despite their rough approximation, characteristic, recurring distribution patterns can be recognized: West-alpine species that come to Tyrol via Vorarlberg; southern species that range from Carinthia to Styria, Lower Austria and even Upper Austria, etc. Die Alpen nehmen eine großen Anteil der Landesfläche von Österreich ein.
