NOT present] ; The 1968 second edition of Biological Science: An I…nquiry Into Life (BSCS Yellow Version), edited by John A. Moore and published by Harcourt, Brace & World, was a seminal high school textbook emphasizing inquiry-based learning, molecular biology, and evolution. It aimed to move beyond rote memorization, focusing on scientific investigation rather than just facts. Key details regarding this 1968 edition include: Focus on Inquiry: The text and accompanying laboratory guide emphasized investigation, challenging students to analyze data and formulate hypotheses rather than just observing. Content and Structure: It was designed for 10th or 11th-grade students, heavily incorporating modern biological findings from the 1950s and 60s, including molecular biology and genetics. Reception: While lauded for promoting scientific thinking, some contemporary reviews suggested that despite the title, the text still contained a "good deal of telling" rather than pure inquiry, and it was quite rigorous. Impact: This BSCS text was considered a landmark in reforming biology education in the United States, moving away from descriptive biology toward a process-oriented approach. The book was frequently revised and reapproved for use in classrooms throughout the late 1960s and 1970s. ; 5 Excellent presentation of evolution, integrating synthetic theory. "Marred by progressionist ideology and claims of link to cultural evolution." ; BSCS "Yellow Version" aka Biological Science: An Inquiry Into Life ; FINE. Book.

4pp., ,4to. Bifolium. Printed in gold on shiny art paper, with the two illustrations in black. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. The recto of the first leaf carries a memoir of Lady Barrow, 'Reproduced, by permission, from "The Surrey Comet," Dec. 25, 1899.': 'LADY BARROW - nee Rosamond Hester Elizabeth, daughter of the…late William Pennell, Esq., Consul-General in Brazil - was born January 5th, 1810, and was the twenty-first child of her parents. Six weeks after her birth she became the adopted daughter of the Right Hon. John Wilson Croker, who had married her eldest sister. [.] While at Kensington Palace, when she was about nine, she was twice sent for to play with the Queen (then Princess Victoria), but on both occasions she could not be found. As a girl, Misss Croker was celebrated for her beauty, and of her portrait, at the age of 17, by Sir Thomas Lawrence, it was said by Allen [sic] Cunningham, that "men stood before it in a half-circle admiring its loveliness in the exhibition: it was all airiness and grace." [.] A further entry recalls an interesting reminiscence of the Duke of Wellington: "Twelve Days before the Duke of Wellington's death, he had gone over from Walmer to Folkestone, for the special purpose of seeing Mr. and Mrs. Croker and Lady Barrow. The Duke won the hearts of her five little daughters by writing his name in their albums. On his return to the station, the Duke handed the ladies in, and insisted on taking the front seat, saying, I must sit opposite to Nony (Lady Barrow)." One of Lady Barrow's great friends was the late Bishop Wilberforce, who was also godfather to some of her children. [.]' The central pages carry facing reproductions of miniatures of Lady Barrow, the first by Sir Thomas Lawrence, executed in 1827, the second, by G. F. Zink, made from a photograph taken in 1899. The last page carries two poems, the first, by 'R. N. B. [i.e. Lady Barrow herself]. titled 'Written on having passed my Ninetieth Birthday'; the second, 'taken from an American Magazine'. A final religious sentiment is followed by: 'W[illiam]. B[ramley].-M[oore]., 26 R[ussell]. Sq[uare]., Jan. 6th, 1900.' Scarce: no copy on COPAC or OCLC WorldCat.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Lot of 36 titles from the Arno / New York Times Series The American Negro, His History and his literature. All told, the volumes are clean and well kept. From the home of a well regarded historian of Black studies. Also was a tobacco smoker, and that combined with age has led to occasional toning /… darkening of the tan cloth part of these hardcover volumes - though without any consistency, it is present to some degree on nearly all. Faint odor as well, especially for those of sensitive nose, though to this seller it is not egregious. Besides that, the condition is pretty solid on all. Binding are all quite strong, sturdy, tight , square. No markings were found in any of the books, and no other damage to interiors at all. One volume has some fraying to the edge of the cloth of the front, and some of the volumes have lesser or greater degrees of rubbing, scuffing, dustsoiling, but all told clean beyond the toning. Autograph Letter Signed ('J W Croker') from John Wilson Croker [to George Pellew, Dean of Norwich], stating the opinion that King George IV's letters in Pellew's life of Lord Sidmouth 'give a higher idea of his powers of mind' than was the case.

4pp., 12mo. Very good, on lightly-aged paper with watermarked date 1848. Addressed to 'My dear Dean'. As the letter clearly concerns Pellew's life of his father-in-law Lord Sidmouth (1847), with Croker referring to his own review of the book in the Quarterly Review, the reason for the gap between the date of publication of the b…ook and the writing of the letter is unclear. Croker writes that he has received Pellew's 'last livraison & kind letter which gives a very just idea of the correspondence'. He feels that Pellew hits 'one point which I had already hinted at in my review of your work - that the King's letters give a higher idea of his powers of mind than was perhaps strictly speaking the fact, as he very generally recapitulated the reasons propounded by his correspondent. If the King's papers should ever become accessible this would I think be found to be very largely the case - but, as we read them, his letters tho often deficient in grammar & sometimes odd by word are creditabe both to his head & heart.' After touching on the King's 'faults of style' Croker appeals for information regarding 'Col. Pringle, 'preparatory to my laying siege to him'. In a postscript Croker writes: 'All the letters about the high Bishoprick Lord Sidmouth showed me, the obnoxious candidate Geo. Beresford was a particular friend of my own.'.

Fairs are held here on the first Tuesday of April, the first Wednesday of August, and the last Tuesday of October. An urn of very antique form was found, about 25 years ago, within an earthen tumulus here. Population, 139, Houses 28.' There were no fairs during my time there, the number of houses had increased to 32, the population decreased to around 80.
