Introduction : Irène Momtaz has been dealing in Islamic art for almost thirty years, and has sold items to public collections as well as advising private collectors. During that time, one of the most distinguishing elements in Irène's work has always been her impeccable sense of taste and quality. In her view, objects were more than items of historical or scholarly value, but always manifestations of beauty. The play between materials, shapes, colours and designs created by Islamic craftsmen, hundreds of years ago, can still trigger our imagination and reflection on the variety in the natural and created world that surrounds us. The objects presented here e examples from major categories of the Islamic decorative arts from the 9th-10th centuries to the 18th century AD, from different parts of the Islamic World. Amongst them are ceramics, metalwork, glass, textiles and woodwork. They comprise a large repertoire of designs: animate and inanimate, from the vegetal and figural to the calligraphic and geometric, and ranging from the naturalistic to the abstract. This shows that at all times Islamic craftsmen and designers were driven to translate particular forms into designs suited to particular objects and techniques in which they were executed, from the painted surface to the sculpted body. In this way ordinary everyday objects assumed a status higher than that of the sheer utilitarian. They could sometimes tell a story, reflect on its user, or remind him of the divine. Looking at the variety of objects seen here, one notices that a common thread through the history of Islamic craft production is the creativity, intuition and innovation of craftsmen and designers, always ready to experiment with new techniques, shapes and designs in order to reach particular markets of consumers. A particularly good example are the ceramics of Iznik, some of which are presented here, where the production of tiles for the Ottoman imperial mosques, enabled potters to transfer the same costly techniques of production to more mundane wares for the commercial market. Likewise, in the early Islamic period in Iraq and later Iran, potters found a way to recreate the look of precious metal objects by applying to the surface of ceramics a metallic lustrous sheen. This method was unique to Islamic work- shops and opened new horizons of decoration for ceramics for centuries after. In Europe, the products of Islamic craftsmen were so highly regarded that for centuries they were treated as prized possessions of royal courts and the church, across restraints of culture and faith. Like our forefathers, who marvelled at the beauty of Islamic decorative arts, we still have today the opportunity to draw pleasure from its exquisiteness and intricacy. By doing so, we can reflect on the culture that produced it and enter a world far beyond the limits of our contemporary surroundings. Dr. Jochen Sokoly.

In den Warenkorbpaperback. Zustand: Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.

The same applies to the Japanese porcelain. The Islamic pottery is also fully representative, while the Turkish pottery of the Isnik kilns is one of the three finest collections in the world. Only in the field of Korean porcelain, where the collection is no more than fair, is it still necessary to acquire a fuller range of outstanding pieces." excerpt from the introductory text by Douglas Barrett, Keeper of the Department of Oriental Antiquities, 1981.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - This volume brings together twenty-four of Ralph Pinder-Wilson's studies on Islamic art, published over thirty years. These deal mainly with the decorative arts - lustre pottery, bronze, jade and glass - a field in which the author is an eminent authority. The objects covered range from early Islamic glass and lustre ware to the ivories produced in Norman Sicily and later Persian bronzes. The art of Mughal India and Afghanistan is also covered, in a number of important studies on manuscripts produced for Persian and Mughal rulers from the fifteenth to the seventeenth centuries. Two major papers reprinted here range outside the usual field of the art historian. The first, a study of the Malcolm celestial globe, explores the history and iconography of Islamic depictions of the constellations; the second, a study of the Persian garden from the Achaemenid to the Qajar period, explores the textual evidence, and discusses the influence of this type of garden on the visual arts.

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Fine. 1st Edition. 2 volume set in blue cloth slip-case. 439 pages fully illustrated in colour, numerous line drawings section on documentary inscriptions with translations hardback with dust jacket (slipcased) 36 x 26 cm. 'This two-part volume contains a large and important group of objects and manuscripts that may be broadly categorised as scientific instruments, tools or magical implements. Many objects of this kind have never before been systematically catalogued, and this volume brings together much information previously scattered to present a corpus of material for future comparative study. The astronomical instruments are those primarily connected with the fundamental concerns of Islamic astronomy determining the times of prayer and the direction of Mecca and the teaching and practice of cosmology and astrology. The Collection includes important individual pieces, among them a fine celestial globe made in 1285 6 and a unique Judeo-Arabic astrolabe of c. 1300. Another 218 entries include medical manuscripts, magic bowls, amulets and other magical or geomantic devices that reflect different aspects of medieval Islamic medical care, while a group of mortars, a selection from the large collection of locks, and miscellaneous tools such as scissors, scales and weights, complete this survey of objects which embody the varied preoccupations of Islamic culture. The information presented includes a ground-breaking study of leather workers in medieval Iran.'.
