Eisenhower, presided over the transformation of the United States from a fragile agrarian republic into a continental power and then a global superpower. Washington established the precedents of the office, including the cabinet system and the voluntary surrender of power after two terms. The early presidents from Adams through John Quincy Adams, most of them Virginians or Adamses, defined the limits of federal authority, doubled the nationâs territory through the Louisiana Purchase, and confronted the strains of the War of 1812. Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson expanded the powers of the presidency in the Progressive Era and drew the nation into world affairs. Franklin D. Roosevelt then led the country through the Great Depression and the Second World War, serving an unprecedented four terms before the Twenty-second Amendment limited the office to two. Harry S. Truman and Eisenhower, in turn, shaped the postwar order, committing the United States to containment of the Soviet Union and to a standing role in international affairs.…
