The first edition of Apsley Cherry-Garrard's account of his Antarctic expedition, handsomely illustrated with reproductions of photographs, paintings, and sketches by his friend Edward A. Wilson and other crew members. Cherry-Garrard inherited a large fortune in 1907, and after spending two years cruising around the world on cargo boats he volunteered for the legendary polar explorer Robert Falcon Scott's second Antarctic expedition. Scott did not survive the journey, and Edward Wilson and Robertson Bowers died with him. Cherry-Garrard acquitted himself well on the expedition, despite his youth and inexperience, but he never recovered from the tragedy. The Worst Journey in the World was an instant classic of exploration literature, read by millions, but the author never used his talents to forge a career as a writer. Haunted by the loss of his friends in Antarctica and weakened by an illness he contracted while serving in the First World War, he spent the rest of his life in the twilight of depression.
