The first edition of the scarce 'Royal Natural History', a beautifully illustrated exploration of mammals, birds, reptiles, molluscs and insects. Bound across two volumes, in later cloth. Renewed endpapers. Undated, dated from the British Library. Profusely illustrated with over two thousand engravings, including thirty-five chromolithographic plates. Collated, complete. A comprehensive textbook systematically arranged into forty-five sub-groups, including American monkeys, seals, elephants, bats, shrews, bears, toothless animals, swimming birds, frogs etc. Edited by James Wylde, with an introduction to the study of natural history by Scottish zoologist Dr. Andrew Wilson. In a later cloth binding. Externally, smart, with rubbing and bumping to the extremities and light marks to the boards. Rear hinge to Vol II starting but firm. Internally, generally firmly bound, with plate and p. 575-576 detached but present, and plate facing p. 713 detached but present. Pages are generally bright, with a few scattered spots and occasional tide marks. Offsetting to the endpapers. Archival repair to pp. 709-712, which has withstood notable tide marks. Ownership ink inscription to the front free endpapers. Good. book.
