Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fine. 318 pages : illustrations (some color), maps ; 25 cm ; ISBN 9781840675221, 1840675225 ; OCLC 52286362 ; Originally published: London: Chatham, 1998 ; color pictorial boards in similar dustjacket ; In this book, Brian Lavery places the Battle of the Nile in its full strategic context, showing the interplay of military and political factors that sent Nelson's squadron into the Mediterranean in pursuit of the powerful French invasion fleet. This was also Nelson's first independent fleet command, and the author shows the development of his command style and the forging of the esprit de corps which was later to triumph at Trafalgar. It also provides a fascinating and detailed insight into the nature and conditions of naval war in the Age of Sail, from the strain felt by fleet commanders, isolated from higher authority and starved of information of the enemy, to the daily lives of the sailors and the tactics used in battle. --Source: Publisher ; Brian Lavery, is a British naval historian, author, and Curator Emeritus at the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London, England. ; FINE/FINE. Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - The naval chaplain Cooper Willyams (1762-1816), who was educated at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, and took holy orders in 1784, published this account of the West Indies campaign in 1796. The son of a navy commander, Willyams was also a self-taught artist and topographer, and in 1802 published his eyewitness account of the battle of the Nile, also reissued in this series. The campaign against the French in the Caribbean was notable for the large numbers of combatants on both sides who succumbed to yellow fever. Using his own notes and the accounts of other eyewitnesses, Willyams describes the arrival of the fleet, commanded by Sir Charles Grey and Sir John Jervis (later Earl St Vincent, for whom Willyams acted as chaplain), in Barbados; the actions undertaken against the French to secure the islands of Martinique, St Lucia, and Guadeloupe; and the subsequent recapture of the latter by the French.
