He is chiefly remember for his famous historical painting "The Fathers of Confederation" The book describes how Harris lived as an artist in a country in which art was of little interest to most citizens. Using the artist letters as his source, Williamson reconstructs Harris's early years, his travels, his work as a portraitist, his teaching methods and principles, the artistic and political life in Montreal and his relationships with members of his family.
