[First printed in 1950; completely revised in the light of new material] Church of England Sisters of Mercy, founded by Mother Lydia at Devonport in 1848, united with Sisterhood of the Holy Cross (Park Village 1845) in 1856. -- `The publication of Experiences of an English Sister of Mercy excited great interest, not only among Protestant Churchmen, members of Convocation or otherwise, but especially among women who (like Miss [Margaret] Goodman) had made trial of Sisterhood life inthe Devonport Society and perhaps other Communities and found it not to their liking. In the case of this second attack by Miss Goodman, Mother Lydia's policy of silence was strictly main- tained. There were no replies or rebuttals other than the Society's steady pursuit of its two-fold aim of complete dedication to God in prayer and of service to man in works of mercy. Miss [Florence] Nightingale's opinion of Miss Goodman's book, of her claim to the title "Sister of Mercy", and the reliability of her testimony, expressed in the Appendix to Notes on Hospitals, is the more valuable because of its detachment from the ecclesiastical issues which coloured most of the estimates, and also because of Miss Nightingale's generous tribute on another occasion to Miss Goodman's good qualities as a nurse and her twice proved willingness to recommend her for positions for which she believed her to be qualified. Miss Nightingale described Experiences of an English Sister of Mercy and Sisterhoods in the Church of England as "Two very foolish books by the same woman calling herself an `English Sister of Mercy'.in which the difficulty is not to find what is false, but to find what is true".'
