3pp., 4to. Bifolium. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn, with slight damage to a corner of the second leaf. Pencil note in another hand at foot of last page. Hamilton (1781-1876), Oriental Secretary to the British Embassy at Constantinople, published 'Antar: A Bedoueen Romance' with the London publisher John Murray in 1819…. The present letter therefore relates to a pre-publicity copy of the book, which Wrighte has read with 'great pleasure'. Readers are, he considers, 'much obliged to Mr. Terrick Hamilton for presenting it to the Public in such an elegant English dress'. He complains that the book 'contains but little information with respect to the domestic habits of the Arabians' and no allusion to the Red Sea (despite the fact that it 'relates to the different Tribes of Arabs in Arabia Felix, bordering on the Coasts of the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf'), but finds that it has 'every mark of genuineness'. He also discusses 'the Arabic names for the Constellations' and 'the pasturing of Cattle'. The latter part of the letter concerns his son Henry. He explains that he feels 'anxiety to get him into some situation within the Church or in some civil capacity at Home or abroad', and suggests that the reason why he has not replied to Brydges's 'kind Letter concerning him', may be that he 'has been improvident and I hope is now fully sensible of it, and is perhaps ashamed to write to you'. The Gentleman's Magazine, November 1854, carries a short obituary for Wrighte.

Full morocco in box. Zustand: Very Good. New Edition. Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece, 28 engraved plates, octavo, pp 14, + two-page publisher's catalogue at the rear, age-toning and some signs of use internally though this is usually restricted to the margins, with the contemporary signature of V. Owen Smythe of Condo…ver Park, and loosely inserted is the later armorial bookplate of Reginald Cholmondeley of Condover Hall, also loosely inserted is a further publishers' catalogue of 16 pages, uncut and partially unopened, the first page of which is detached; finely bound in full red crushed morocco with ornate gilt decoration on both covers, the spine gilt with raised bands and a small black morocco label, contained in a custom-made box of marbled paper over boards, a red calf spine and cloth lined; the binder is not known but the inked initials "T.A.B. 1974" on the rear endpaper may identify them? [From the library of the gardening historian Anthony Huxley, with his stamp on the front endpaper. RARE.[ First published in 1767, the Sir John Soane Library suggests this is probably the third edition of this pattern book, although the second could also be possible. Apparently highly influential, though nothing seems to be known of its author.].

Original Wrappers. Zustand: Near Fine+. Early Reprint. "A New Edition" of this enchanting pattern book of architectural follies, describing designs for huts, hermitages, grottoes, and other rural retreats in which many bizarre building materials are incorporated. Tall 8vo (250 x 132mm)): 8pp, with allegorical frontispiece by A.…Thornthwaite, engraved by Isaac Taylor (Archer notes that Wrighte was first to publish a scene [the frontispiece] in a book of architectural designs, showing specific structures set into natural surroundings in a consciously artful way); 28 full-page plates (25 designs for various garden structures, some with plans demonstrating Wrighte's concern for Palladian principles of proportion and symmetry), and eight-page publisher's catalogue. Original plain blue wrappers lined with stiff white paper; custom brown cloth clamshell case, black leather label gilt to front, printed paper label to spine. A superb, unsophisticated survival, uncut in original wrappers, light water spots to front wrapper (but none within), occasional light foxing, an excellent example. Archer 358.4. RIBA 3724. Harris 954. Colvin, p. 1169 ("This was a successful pattern book, but nothing whatever is known about its author."). Schimmelman 147. The Third Edition (of four), virtually unaltered from the first edition of 1767. Wrighte's terse text (descriptions of the plates that follow) offers charming asides; of one structure he writes, "This design is calculated to be built on a small verdant amphitheatre, near a murmuring stream, and as a proper retreat from the fatigues of a sultry day." In the publisher's catalogue at rear, this title is one of 32 architectural and decorative pattern books, and the fact that it went into three editions over a period of 35 years indicates its perceived importance. "Although lacking Thomas Wrighte's inventive genius [Thomas Wrighte was a landscape gardener and amateur architect who published designs for Arbors (1755) and Grottos (1758)], William Wrighte's collection of grotesque folliesmosques, hermitages and the like, built of rustic materials, moss, branches, roots, thatch, even woolhad far greater impact, being the only pattern-book on the subject that was readily available and easily manageable, which Thomas Wrighte's books certainly were not." (Harris) N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed. Hardcover. New Edition. 14 pages in text. 24 x 14.5 cm. Leaf after text, advert by publisher for Books on Architecture. ARCHER 358.5. "The plans reveal Wrighte's Concern for Palladian principle of proportion and symmetry. Typical examples are composed of squares, circles, and other regular figures; the hut in Plate 1 is square i…n plan, 10 feet 9 inches on a side, and the plan of the mosque in Plate 22 consists of a circle, 20 feet in diameter, plus four squares, eight feet on a side, attached symmetrically to the perimeter of the circle." Archer also notes Wrighte was the first to publish a scene (frontispiece) in a book of architectural designs -- showing specific designs set into natural surroundings in a consciously artful way. Few worm holes in margins, spine dried, extremity rubbing. Contemporary leather backed marbled boards. Very good.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Wrighte, William. Grotesque architecture, or rural amusement; consisting of plans, elevations, and sections, for huts, retreats, summer and winter hermitages . cascades, baths, mosques, moresque pavilions, grotesque and rustic seats, green houses &c, London, I.J. Taylor, 179…0. 8vo. 14pp + (2)pp publisher's list. With engraved frontispiece by A. Thornthwaite, and 28 engraved plates. Ochre morocco, with gilt grotto design on front cover, similarly blind-stamped on back, gilt title on cover and spine (by Peter Foster, with his fish device inside back cover). A finely produced catalogue of measured plans for grottoes, hermitages and exotic garden buldings. Oriental or rustic in inspiration, several have Indian or Turkish motifs - lotus leaf bases, columns terminating in palms, mosque-like domes; there are 4 dramatic designs for picturesque cascades. An innovation of note is the frontispiece of a landscape setting which incorporates in one plate most of Wrighte's designs; it was intended to help the 'prospective client' visualize his choice of feature in situ. Archer says 'Wrighte was the first to publish such a scene in a book of architectural designs - showing specific designs set into natural surroundings in a consciously artful way'. Wrighte cites Thomas Shaw's Travels . (in) Barbary and the Levant, (1738) as his authority on mosques. The second edition (the first was published in 1767). A very good copy. Bookplate of John Steegman, tipped in. Berlin Katalog 3420. John Archer, The Literature of British Domestic Architecture 1715-1842, 1985, p853. Hardcover. Zustand: Befriedigend. 1. Auflage. 14 pages (including etched frontispiece), 1 uncounted leaf, 28 plates (complete). 4°. Early work on architectural follies by the obscure British architect William Wrighte. "Another example of this fascination with ruinous materials is William Wrighte's "Grotesque Architecture, or Rur…al Amusement" (1967) [.] The frontispiece [.] is filled with representations of ruins, from the ruined arch in the right background, framed by a large oak, to the primitive hut in the left middle ground, to the crumbling hermitage in the right foreground. The quotation on the frontispiece, from Robert Norris's "Art of Architecture" (1742), emphasizes the rough surface of the buildings and the way it should interact with natural elements[.]" (Wanning Harries, 1994, p. 72). Recent full-leather binding with gilded back. Browning and foxing throughout. Flyleaves heavily stained. Title page with small ink stains. Plate 16 with loss in upper right edge (in white margin). Owner's entry on front flyleaf. First edition. Rare.
