Soft cover. Zustand: Collectible. 2nd Edition. Very Good. Large Paperback, string bound. RARE ORIGINAL 1896 printing. 23 pp. + illustrated by Wm. Bode with 32 mounted full-page plates printed on India paper, several text illustrations as well as a front cover illustration and a rear cover drawing. Original wrappers with string ties and front cover illustration. Second Edition - as scarce as First Edition. Only difference from the First edition is cover color - now in half-tone browns. String tied bindings. Tissued illustrations secured at corners (first illustration is loose, as is front cover). The paper is delicate and fragile. The book is free from markings or notations. Beyond pictorial and photographic albums, this was the first book written about San Francisco Chinatown, published posthumously by the widow of the author, a young portrait artist from New York, who died prematurely in the year of publication. Bode was fascinated by Chinatown and its residents, whom he found to be a clean, sober, sagacious and industrious people. His skillful sketches of people and scenes convey a vivid picture of Chinatown at the end of the 19th century. A very RARE and earnest presentation depicting the life of Chinese immigrants in their USA west coast haven - San Francisco. RARE. COLLECTIBLE CALIFORNIA HISTORY. [B131-B20].
