Signed by him with a dedication to the front endpaper. An uncommon work. This work was published for private distribution among Twopeny's friends, and therefore all copies are signed. 'For The Earl of Ashburnham from Wm Twopeny' to the recto of front endpaper. With the bookplate of Michaelis Tomkinson, Franche Hall Worcestershire. Bertram Ashburnham was a British peer and a keen bibliophile. He amassed an important collection of books and manuscripts and is widely considered to be one of the great collectors of the nineteenth century. William Twopeny was an amateur antiquarian draughtsman and printmaker. He specialised in architectural subjects, and many of his drawings were given to the BM in 1874 by his son. To his introduction Twopeny notes that when he began attending to ancient architecture it was generally supposed 'that buy little wood-work prior to the fifteenth century existed'. This work demonstrates details of woodwork from earlier than this. He starts at the twelfth century for this particular work. Collated, complete with thirteen plates. Each plate has an accompanying leaf explaining the item, when it was created and more. A bright example of this work created to inform its readership of the history of woodwork. In a quarter cloth binding with contemporary boards. Repaired to the spine with tape. Externally, rubbed to the board edges and to the spine. Several marks to boards.
