First Limited Edition. A fine copy. Bound limited edition set of the portraits + Camel March taken from a proof set from the 1926 Subscribers edition of Seven Pillars of Wisdom, This is one of just 220 copies, this an unnumbered one, bound by the Fine Bindery and printed by the Burlington Press in 1977. These are superb reproductions of the plates from the '26 SP in full colour. Bound in pale beige paper covered boards with title printed to front and with darker brown cloth spine. T.E. Lawrence commissioned illustrations for Seven Pillars of Wisdom from leading artists of the day. They were reproduced in colour in his lavish 1926 edition of the subscribers' abridgement. Emir Feisal by Augustus John, oils, full colour. These were printed from a set of proof plates put together by the original printer, Whittingham & Griggs.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. 208, xx, [1] ; illustrated, 4 in color ; 21 cm. ; John Horace McFarland (1859-1948) was an American master printer and horticulturist. Throughout his career, he advocated for civic beautification, and he became a leader in the conservation movement of the early twentieth century. His wide-ranging achievements made a lasting impact on printing processes, horticulture, and environmental protection. During McFarland's early years, his father operated a nursery and a small weekly newspaper in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. McFarland worked in both of his father's businesses as a youth. These early experiences instilled the passion for horticultural beauty and the business expertise that distinguished him personally and professionally. He eventually purchased his father's press. Combining the skills learned from these early experiences, he established a successful printing company of his own. He founded the J. Horace McFarland Company/Mount Pleasant Press, specializing in seed catalogs and nursery trade publications. Over the course of his lifetime, McFarland wrote and lectured extensively on horticulture, printing methods, and civic improvement. McFarland was a prominent member of the American Rose Society. At first a shy Oxford scholar and archaeologist with a facility for languages, he joined and went on to lead the Arab revolt against the Ottoman Turks while the rest of the world was enmeshed in World War I. With its richly detailed evocation of the land and the people Lawrence passionately believed in, its incisive portraits of key players, from Faisal ibn Hussein, the future Hashemite king of Syria and Iraq, to General Sir Edmund Allenby and other members of the British imperial forces, The Seven Pillars of Wisdom is an indispensible primary historical source. It helps us to understand today's Middle East, while giving us thrilling accounts of military exploits (including the liberation of Aqaba and Damascus), clandestine activities, and human foibles." ; tan colored cloth in beautifully illustrated dustjacket ; bookplate ; thick, heavy volume ; FINE/FINE. Halle, Rengerschen Buchhandlung, 1800. Without wrappers as published in "Annalen der Physik. Herausgegeben von Ludwig Wilhelm Gilbert", Bd. 6, Drittes Stück. The entire issue offered (=Heft 3). Titlepage to vol. 6. Pp. 249-376. Nicholson's paper: pp. 340-359. Light browning. A faint dampstain to upper right corners on some leaves. First German edition of Nicholson's famous paper in which he, together with his friend Anthony Carlisle, succeeded in breaking up molecules into the constituent atoms of hydrogen and oxygen. They thus established the usefulness of the converse of the voltaic cell, by using electricity to produce chemical actions."On March 20 of that year (1820) Volta wrote to Banks, president ofthe Royal Society, informing him of his construction of an electric battery. Nicholson heard of this and with the aid of a friend built his own Voltaic pile by May 2. It was the first in England. Nicholson's great contribution was to place wires attached to the two ends of the pile in water. He found that with the current flowing, bubbles of gaz (hydrogen and oxygen) ere given off. He had "electolyzed" water, breaking up the molecules into the individual elements. He thus reversed the demonstration of Cavendish, that hydrogen and oxygen could unite to form water. This was the first demonstration that an electric current could bring about a chemical reaction - the reverse of olta's demonstration that a chemical action could bring about an electrical current."(Asimov).
