In den WarenkorbFirst collected edition, first impression, of the series Coming Men on Coming Questions, including a contribution by Winston Churchill soon after he abandoned the Conservative Party. This was the copy of another contributor, Thomas Shaw, with his bookplate, and ownership signature dated December 1905. The campaigning journalist William Thomas Stead arranged the series, which offered 26 politicians an opportunity to set forth their views on an issue they deemed important. Each was published individually with an introduction by Stead earlier that year and here reprinted in volume form. Churchill's contribution, "Why I Am a Free Trader", was his first published statement on the question after he crossed the floor in 1904. His staunch belief in free trade was the focus of his political activities in this period, and he switched to the Liberals due to the Conservative Party's move towards protectionism. "Churchill attacked his former party with a ferocity that gave rise to lasting enmities and the accusation that he was a turncoat" (ODNB). Churchill sets out his two key arguments: free trade makes food as cheap as possible, and the Briton should have the right to buy whatever they wish without interference by the state. Thomas Shaw (1850-1937) served as MP for Hawick Burghs from 1892 to 1909 and Solicitor General for Scotland from 1894 to 1895. His contribution, "South Africa's Constitutional Hope: a Liberal Forecast", anticipates a South African federation on the same model of Australia and Canada, and peaceful union of the Dutch and English peoples. Shaw had been much maligned due to his opposition to the Boer War. Stead's introduction calls him "the comingest of all the coming men in the new Parliament". Provenance: the collection of Steve Forbes, chairman of Forbes Magazine, and presidential candidate in the 1996 and 2000 US elections. Cohen B3; Woods B2. Octavo. Original quarter cloth, printed paper spine label, front cover lettered in black. With an early custom brown paper jacket. Neat repair to joints and extremities, slight soiling to covers. A very good copy.
