First Edition. Octavo (16.5cm); purple cloth, stamped in blind and gilt; viii, 102pp. Spine and adjacent boards well-sunned, with additional patches of fading; leading corners bumped; moderate rubbing and wear, some soiling. Large bookplate on front pastedown, ex libris on ffep, author inscription on verso and additional notes on copyright page; rear endpaper torn along top edge, library slip holder tipped on rear pastedown; bindings shaken, spots of foxing throughout. Good. Author and schoolmaster William Soleman's Songs from the West are not intended to evoke images of the wide prairie or herds of buffalo or the myriad tragedies of native Americans; the "west" in question is his native English southwest, i.e., Devon and Cornwall, stretching towards the English Channel. While Soleman was somewhat diligent in his output, critical respect seemed to elude him, or at least it did for this volume of sentimental poetry. Signed.
