A foundational guide on how property, money, and gifts (called "legacies") were legally given to people through wills in 19th-century England. During the 1800s, British inheritance law was incredibly strict and complicated. Preston wrote this "practical treatise" (which just means a thorough, step-by-step textbook) to help lawyers and judges understand types of legacies, their conditions and various debts and reductions. In Commentaries on American Law, James Kent says "the law of legacies has been well digested by Mr. Roper, but with more force, precision and accuracy by Mr. Preston." A reprint edition, star-paged to the London edition, was published in New York in 1827. There are several microform and digital copies of the 1824 London edition, but few printed examples.
