Together with an Essay on Erythroxylon Coca' by W. S. Searle is a nineteenth-century medical treatise addressing emerging conceptions of nervous disorders associated with modern life. Searle characterizes symptoms of mental fatigue, anxiety, and physical debility as manifestations of a distinct neurological condition, reflecting contemporary efforts to medicalize nervous exhaustion. The accompanying essay evaluates Erythroxylon coca as a therapeutic stimulant, illustrating an early phase in medical experimentation with coca-derived substances before their addictive risks were fully recognized, and situating the work within transitional debates in neurology and pharmacology.
