Published in 1884, this is a scarce original offprint of this important scientific paper by the botanist and mycologist William Phillips in which he recognised that "The Breaking of the Water" a local term for the sudden change in lakes and ponds where the water becomes thick with greenish particles in suspension. He identified that it was not a chemical change or dirt, but rather the rapid growth of microscopic Cyanobacteria like algae. In the paper he studies the phenomenon at Ellesmere, Hawkstone, Bomere, Betton, Apley Pools, etc The paper is 8.5 inches tall approx. and runs to 24 pages plus a double page illustration of the microscopic organisms he discovered. CONDITION Noticeable foxing to title page, with some foxing within, some page corner creasing wear, slight separation of some of the pages else in good general condition. Please note this is an original separately printed offprint with its own title page, and not an article separated from the transactions.
