First four issues signed by the editor and various contributors: issue no. 1 signed by Barney Rosset; no. 2, which introducted the Beat Movement to the nation while Howl was still in the midst of its obscenity trial, is signed by Rosset plus Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Gary Snyder, Michael McClure, and Allen Ginsberg; no. 3 is signed by both Rosset and Gary Snyder; no. 4 signed by Rosset and Robin Blaser. A remarkable Beat and American counter-culture high spot which rarely hits the market as a complete set, rarer still in this condition, and unheard of signed by Rosset and the key contributors. [ii], 296; [ii], 308 pp. With a Memoir and Two Portraits by Ford Madox Brown. Oliver Madox Brown was the son of Ford Madox Brown. This is a posthumous work, Oliver Madox Brown's death in 1874 aged 19 had deeply distressed the boy's father and all the brethren of the Pre-Raphaelite movement. The book is recorded by Wolff in his Strange Stories. Tipped in at the front is a good signed letter from Ford Madox Brown to Norman Maccoll (the editor of the Athenaeum) who had favourably reviewed the book -- 2 pages on black bordered notepaper from Fitzroy Square dated February 19 1876. The review of Dwale Bluth had appeared the day before. He thanks Maccoll for his article on his son '.the highest testimony to so young a writer.' Also tipped in is a half oage fragment of the manuscript in Oliver's hand and (apparently) signed by him on the blank back of the oage. 12 lines, about 150 words with several corrections, the passage appear with many changes on page 274 of Heditch's legacy. Also loosely inserted is a memorial sonnet to Oliver by TH Hall Caine that appears to be in his hand and is signed by him (1880). lastly also loosely inserted is a press cutting from 1875 of an anonymous poem that mentions Oliver 'A Birth Song ofor Olivia Frances Madox Rossetti' by Swinburne. Original publisher rose-brown cloth on beveled boards lettered gilt at the spine. Slight lean, spine ends very lightly chipped else very good. Signedes.
