Man macht es sich zu einfach, wenn man die jüngste Geschichte der katholischen Kirche interpretiert, indem man die verschiedenartigen Charaktere der drei Päpste gegeneinander ausspielt. Die Zusammenrufung des Zweiten Vatikanischen Konzils bedeutet natürlich einen Wendepunkt. Purdy gibt einen ins einzelne gehenden Überblick zu den großen Ereignissen, die den Geist und die Taten von PiusXII. und JohannesXXIII. bestimmt haben. Er zeigt mit großem Nachdruck, daß es eine Kontinuität in Gedanken und Handlungen zwischen den beiden Päpsten gibt, etwa in der Haltung der Kirche gegenüber der modernen Demokratie, gegenüber internationalen Gemeinschaften, gegenüber dem Krieg, gegenüber dem Status des Laien in der Kirche, gegenüber religiöser Toleranz, gegenüber der Einheit der christlichen Kirchen und gegenüber der Judenfrage. Diese Kontinuität tritt auch besonders zutage bei den internen Belangen, etwa bei der Reform der Liturgie und der Bibelexegese, denn PiusXII. hatte viele Ziele bestimmt und Initiativen freigesetzt, die das Konzil überhaupt erst arbeitsfähig machten.
