ORIGINAL ANTIQUE PAINTING of SHREWSBURY RACECOURSE & WINDMILL in SHROPSHIRE By William Pearson (1772-1849) 1808 This is an original painting done in 1808 titled "Shrewsbury Racecourse", by the Artist William Pearson (1772-1849) Pearson was a watercolourist and engraver, who is closely assoc…iated with Shropshire. He lived in Shrewsbury for several years and published a book of etchings titled "Select Views of the Antiquities of Shropshire" in 1807, which contained a series of views in the county based on his work there. He was known as an admirer and imitator of the work of renowned watercolourist Thomas Girtin. His own work is sometimes mistaken for Girtin's In 1804, while living in Shropshire, Pearson became a founder member of the Watercolour Society. Pearson was born in Durham but was based in Shrewsbury from around 1802 to 1808, After his time in Shrewsbury, he returned to London and later to Durham, where he worked as a landscape artist and drawing master The painting is in a frame measuring 19 inches by 15.5 inches approx., the actual painting measures 12 inches by 8 inches approx. There seems to be some debate as to where the old Shrewsbury Racecourse was located, this scene showing a prominent Windmill, and what appears to be water in the distance, most likely The River Severn.
