In den WarenkorbOne of two editions issued in 1869, this one from the Richmond and Louisville Medical Journal, July, 1869. 8vo. 29 pp. Baldwin's address upon assuming the presidency of the American Medical Association, emphasizing the reconciliation of physicians after the carnage wrought by the recent Civil War and the important role of medica…l education to the profession. Not in Owen. Apparently not recorded on OCLC, which does locate one copy of an edition printed the same year in Philadelphia (National Library of Medicine), from the association's Transactions. Original printed blue-green front wrapper (detached, lacking rear wrapper). Very good. William O. Baldwin (1818-1886), born near the site where Montgomery, Alabama, was incorporated the following year, received little early formal education, but "read" medicine with a local physician in his teens before graduating from Transylvania University with a medical degree in 1837. He returned home to Montgomery to begin his practice which flourished; he was a founding member of the Medical Association of Alabama, serving as its president in 1851, as well as president of the American Medical Association in 1868. In addition, he attended to the sick and wounded on both sides throughout the Civil War and helped found the First National Bank of Montgomery, serving as its president. He published regularly in medical periodicals, gained membership to a number of medical societies and professional organizations, and served as a member of the board of trustees of the Medical College of Alabama, 1872-1886.
