Original monthly part in the publisher's printed pictorial wrappers, retaining a contemporary inserted abolitionist prospectus for the Society for the Extinction of the Slave Trade and for the Civilization of Africa. Octavo (8vo). pp. 333-440, with printed contents leaf and rear-wrapper advertisement for Bentley's Standard Novels and Romances. Contains the fourth monthly installment, and first appearance of these chapters, of William Harrison Ainsworth's Guy Fawkes: An Historical Romance, comprising Book the First, Chapters VII-IX. Illustrated by George Cruikshank, including the steel engraving Doctor Dee in conjunction with his Seer Edward Kelley, Exhibiting His Magical Skill to Guy Fawkes. Guy Fawkes was serialized in Bentley's Miscellany from January 1840 before its first book publication in 1841. Of particular interest is the contemporary Prospectus of the Society for the Extinction of the Slave Trade and for the Civilization of Africa, issued during the Society's formative period with Thomas Fowell Buxton as chairman. It calls for renewed action against the continuing African slave trade, announces the Society's forthcoming public meeting at Exeter Hall, lists subscribers and donations, and advertises Buxton's The African Slave Trade, and Its Remedy. The provisional committee includes S. Lushington, Sir Robert Harry Inglis, Lord Ashley, T. B. Macaulay, Samuel Gurney, Thomas Sturge, and other prominent political, religious, and reform figures. Contents generally clean with light toning, marginal wear, and occasional chips. The prospectus remains clean and bright, with one leaf unopened. Original wrappers toned and worn, with marginal closed tears, chipping, and creasing; front wrapper detached but present. Spine/backstrip worn and partly perished, though the part remains stitched and holding. Rear wrapper with red staining at the upper outer corner. Housed in a mylar sleeve. A Good copy and an uncommon survival in original monthly form, bringing together early Victorian literary serialization, George Cruikshank illustration, and contemporary British abolitionist activity.
