Contains a biographical note on Mason Whiting Tyler by his son, preceding the autobiographical contents of the book. Contents include early recollections, first weeks of the Civil War, the first fifteen months, July-October 1862, with the Army of the Potomac, under generals McClellan, Burnside, and Hooker, Gettysburg, enforcing the draft, Fairfax Courthouse to Brandy Station, the Wilderness, the Sixth Corps at Spottsylvania, North Anna and Cold Harbor, Petersburg in 1864, the Richmond Campaign, the Defense of Washington, the Battle of Winchester, Petersburg in 1865, several appendices and an index. Colonel Mason Whiting Tyler was born in Amherst, Massachusetts in 1840, and died in New York in 1907. Hardcover, acceptable condition due to minor dampstain. 379 pages, octavo.

In a half calf binding with cloth covered boards. Externally sound with some shelf wear and a slight rubbing to the leather, with some minor rubbing and markings to the boards. Inscribed by a previous owner to the verso of the front free endpaper, dated 1888. Internally, firmly bound. The pages are generally clean throughout with a touch of tone ageing, as usual, and only the minor faint spotting to the occasional leaf, particularly to the first and last few leaves as well as to the leaves of plates, due to the type of paper used. Illustrated with a frontispiece and seven plates. Good. Unnamed (illustrator). book.

The poetic works of English poet, William Mason. Two volumes, The English Garden: A Poem and Elfrida and Caractacus: Dramatic Poems with Mason's Minor Poems Part I. and Par…t II. Bound in the publisher's original cloth. Both works with an individual engraved title page. Mason is particularly well known for The English Garden, a long, georgic poem using the theme of the quintessential English garden as an allusion to his support of Whiggism and Anglicanism. Originally published in four parts between 1772 and 1782. This edition with notes and a commentary to The English Garden by Anglo-Irish politician and abolitionist, William Burgh, first included in the 1783 edition. This copy with the bookplate of twentieth-century British poet and academic, Vivian de Sola Pinto, to the front pastedown. De Sola Pinto published two volumes of poetry during his career; This Is My Englandand Crisis in English Poetry, 18801940. He notably appeared for the defence in the 1960 watershed obscentiy trial, brought against Penguin Books for publishing D. H. Lawrence's uncensored version ofLady Chatterley's Lover. Bound in the original publisher's cloth. Externally, smart. Light sunning and minor edgewear to extremities. Minor loss to paper spine label. Bookplate to front pastedown.
