In den Warenkorb12mo, 4 pp. Bifolium. Watermarked 'TOWGOOD'S | SUPER FINE | 1859'. Eighty-seven lines of text. Text clear and complete on aged and grubby paper. With little hope of influencing the editor of Punch, the author feels compelled to 'write and tell you what I and many others think about your Publication and the malignant spite you display towards individuals who happen to incur your wrath'. This 'malignity', he feels, 'must be derived from that murderous old ruffian from whom your publication takes its name, and which alone prevents it being an influential publication. Men laugh at the jokes in it, and admire the skill of Mr. Leech and his assistants, but II have yet to find the Man whose opinions were ever changed by anything he saw in "Punch".' He gives two examples of 'many instances of individuals who have been persecuted' by the magazine: the actor Charles Kean and 'Mr Williams of Lambeth'. What had Kean 'done to incur the wrath of "Punch"? Simply offended one of its staff'. As for Williams, he had stated, 'in a Speech to the Electors of Lambeth [.] that he had been offered a Title which he rejected - now that was nothing but the truth, for you know very well that a Baronetcy really was offered to Mr Williams and rejected'. The author accuses 'Punch' of being 'ready enough to make yourself a mere tool of corruption [.] trying to do that by ridicule which those in power could not do by flattery'. Quotes 'the advice given this day by the "Weekly Dispatch" to the "Saturday Review", before concluding 'You need not make any funny (?) remarks about any grammatical errors that may appear in this letter. If there are any I admit them, for I do not profess to be a Scholar'.

In den WarenkorbLeather. Zustand: Very Good. Richard Doyle; John Leech; Alfred Crowquill [Alfred Henry Forrester] (illustrator). A smart copy of Bon Gaultier's Ballads, illustrated by well-known artists. The fifteenth edition of this work in a half calf binding. All edges, end papers and paste downs marbled. Numerous illustrations by Richard "Dickie" Doyle (1824-1883), John Leech (1817-1864), Alfred Henry Forrester (1804-1872), known under the pseudonym of Alfred Crowquill, who were all well-known for their illustrations for Punch. William Edmondstoune Aytoun (1813-1865) and Sir Theodore Martin (1816-1909) were both Scottish poets. In around 1841, they became acquainted, and together they wrote a series of humorous articles on the fashions and follies of the time, in which were interspersed the verses which afterwards became popular as the Bon Gaultier Ballads (1855). In a half calf binding. Externally smart, with a little rubbing to the extremities and bumping to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally clean with the odd spot throughout. In den WarenkorbFirst edition, first printing. Publisher's original red cloth with titles in gilt to the spine, in the Sir John Tenniel illustrated dustwrapper. Textured endpapers. Illustrated throughout with 109 black and white plates by Sir John Tenniel, 13 plates and a black and white photograph by Lewis Carroll, and 52 plates by John Leech, Édouard Riou, F. W. Fairholt and many more. A near fine copy, the binding square and firm, with light bumping to the head of the spine and extremities, and light spotting to the upper edge. The contents, with a small previous owner's bookplate pasted in to the inner flyleaf, are otherwise clean throughout, and without inscriptions or stamps. Complete with the better than very good, rubbed, nicked and creased original dustwrapper, which is lightly faded to the spine, and has a touch of spotting on the inside. A lovely example. The definitive account of Sir John Tenniel's (1820-1914) illustrative career, first as a political cartoonist for Punch magazine and, crucially, as the artist behind the definitive depiction of Lewis Carroll's classic children's characters in 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' (1865) and 'Through the Looking Glass' (1871).3 Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. Armorial bookplate of Herman Le Roy Edgar. These high-quality etchings represent all 20 illustrations printed in the first four volumes of Jerrold's Shilling Magazine, 1845-1847. Subsequent volumes were for some reason unillustrated. With a 41-line ALS from Leech to 'My Dear Leigh', very probably Leech's great friend the comic writer Percival Leigh. Dated Aug. 27, 1861, and addressed from Lowestoft, Suffolk, Leech begs his friend 'give [him]self a day or two's holiday and us great pleasure by running down here'. He tells Leigh 'it is a place you would like immensely - everything that you could desire in the way of sailing, bathing and walking about, to say nothing about a very good tap of ale.'. He goes on to tempt Leigh with the prospect of a swim, informing him 'it is not necessary (except for the ladies) to go through the ceremony of engaging a bathing machine - you just [deleted] of your things and walk into the sea as you feel inclined'. A nice warm letter between two lifelong friends who studied together and collaborated on several works.
