In den WarenkorbHardcover. vi, 181 p.; 6 halftone pl.; 22 cm. From the jacket flap: Dr Battersby 'has drawn on Brother Solomon's own letters, the archives of the De La Salle Brothers and numerous contemporary eye-witness accounts (including those of English travellers such as Horace Walpole and Arthur Young) to portray not only the unflinching…courage of Brother Solomon and his companions in the sombre months of persecution that preceded the Terror but also the tragic conflict of loyalties that extended even into the Church. Piece by piece Dr Battersby fills in the details and reveals that heroic sanctity is not necessarily a characteristic of extraordinary personalities but comes equally from the kind of man who began as Nicolas LeClercq, the son of a Boulogne wine merchant destined for a career in his father's business and a quiet life. We see the background of Brother Solomon's early years set in a France where most people were totally unaware of the disaster that was being prepared.' -- 'That nothing should be wanting to satisfy the interested visitor, the skulls and bones of the victims which were dug up in the garden [of the Carmelite monastery] in 1867 may be seen in the crypt of the church; a sad and lugubrious sight. But they are preserved as the relics of martyrs, for on 17th October 1926, Pope Pius XI, in acknowledgement of the fact that these men died rather than take the schismatic Civil Oath, declared Brother Solomon and ninety-four of his companions 'Blessed', together with seventy-two of those killed in Saint-Firmin prison, three in La Force, and twenty-one in the Abbey.'
