Myers was a Professor of Politics at Princeton University and prepared the State Papers of Pr…esident Hoover for publication; Newton was a member of Congress from 1919-1929 and Secretary to the President from 1929-1933. William Starr Myers (June 17, 1877 - January 27, 1956) chronicled New Jersey and the GOP. Myers was graduated from the University of North Carolina, class of 1897. After graduating from UNC cum laude, Myers went to graduate school at Johns Hopkins University where he received his Ph.D. in 1900. Myers became assistant professor at Princeton University, 1906-1918, then professor from 1918 until his death. Walter Hughes Newton (October 10, 1880 - August 10, 1941) was a United States Representative from Minnesota; born in Minneapolis and was graduated from the law department of the University of Minnesota in 1905; was admitted to the bar the same year and commenced practice in Minneapolis, Minnesota; first assistant prosecuting attorney of Hennepin County 1914 - 1918; elected as a Republican to the 66th, 67th, 68th, 69th, 70th, and 71st congresses, from March 4, 1919, until his resignation on June 30, 1929. One brush with history occurred when Congress in 1928 and 1929 adopted what was known as the "Newton Bill" to divide the jurisdiction of the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals, creating the Tenth Circuit, which sits in Denver. This was the first change in the geography of the federal courts since the present system of courts of appeals was created in 1891. Newton left Congress upon his appointment as personal secretary to President Herbert Hoover.

In den WarenkorbFirst edition of this complete, fully documented, and authoritative story of Herbert Hoover's four years as President. Octavo, original navy cloth, tissue-guarded frontispiece portrait of Hoover from the drawing by Clarence R. Mattei. Presentation copy, warmly inscribed by Hoover on the front free endpaper, "Dear Mrs. Bent, This… is not my authorship but I am for it and I am glad you have it. Sincerely Herbert Hoover." Near fine in a very good dust jacket with a chip to the front panel. Rare with such a lengthy inscription. The 31st President of the United States, Herbert Hoover wrote more than two dozen books throughout his lifetime, including The Challenge to Liberty, a harsh criticism of the New Deal. Hoover feared that the New Deal was a threat to the country's "freedom of mind and spirit." He criticized he National Recovery Administration and Agricultural Adjustment Administration as "fascistic," and the 1933 Banking Act as a "move to gigantic socialism.".
